Job Summary: The Medical Officer Special Grade (Paediatrics) will be responsible for performing consultations to diagnose, treat and manage patients in line with Ministry of Health protocol and clinical guidelines and provide care to children, including, new born and other high-risk infants, to help them survive, flourish and develop naturally. Provide technical supervision to medical officers, clinicians, Nurses and midwives to improve their capacity and quality of care.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform ward rounds to assess patient conditions, diagnose, prescribe treatment and discharge or refer complicated cases in line with clinical guidelines and hygiene protocols
- Carry out scientific activity, patient investigation to ensure early detection of disease conditions and guide evidence-based health service delivery
- Provide outpatient services for children who require specialised care
- Provide technical input and services in line of Paediatric HIV/AIDS and TB care
- Keep the patient and family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow; verify understanding to ensure informed consent and adherence to treatment
- Ensure data traceability by recording all medical activities on patients card/ forms and in registration books such that patient treatment is continuous
- Assist with and perform clinical procedures within competency
- Attend to emergency cases in the health facility
- Participate in the recruitment of clinical health workers in line of duty (Medical Officers, Clinical officers)
- Ensure general hygiene standards and universal precautions are followed at all times and implement and monitor actions to reduce bio-hazard risks and improve infection control
- Ensure ongoing training of medical officers, Clinical officers and nurses in order to optimize the quality of care
- Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the Medical Coordinator about any problem or complication of the patients illness, including medical error
- Ensure that medical practices are conducted with the highest level of integrity and ethics according to professional Code of Conduct prescribed by UMDPC and MOH and observe UN/MTI Codes of Conduct while providing services to beneficiaries and the community
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery and a Master’s Degree in Paediatrics is required
- Registration with Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council is required
- Valid practising license is required
- At least two years of work experience in a hospital practice relating to primary health care, Paediatrics, HIV/AIDS and communicable diseases is required
- Experience working with international NGOs is an added advantage
