Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Uganda is part of the LWF World Service and we are currently supporting Congolese and South-Sudanese refugees living in settlements in the districts of Kamwenge, Adjumani, Moyo, Kyangwali and Lamwo respectively.
Job Summary: Under the guidance of the logistics officer, the Driver/Mechanic is responsible for the operation and maintenance of LWF motor vehicles and ensuring the safety and security of authorized passengers, cargo, equipment, and tools on board.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Driving (30%)
- Ensure the assigned vehicle and its accessories are kept in good condition (log books, jacks, wheel spanners, spare tires, etc) in good working order and clean condition and make a thorough daily check of its mechanical condition (e.g., battery, fuel, water, oil, brake fluid, tire pressure, etc.), and promptly reports any fault, damage or loss;
- Always drive at the responsible speed as permitted by the Laws of Uganda (respect for speed limits) while on the road and ensure program staff/materials/equipment are safe while on board.
- Check regularly and ensure that vehicles have valid motor third-party insurance, and assists as required in following up their processing and collection from the banks, insurance companies, and Uganda Revenue Authority offices.
- Drive office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel and delivery and collection of mail, documents, and other supplies and equipment as directed by the supervisors.
- Monitor the vehicle fuel gauge constantly, and report any need for re-fuelling. Ensure the vehicle is refueled during the evening the time to maximize time for field operation.
- Ensure every trip is documented in the vehicle log book, particularly departure/arrival times and mileage readings, as well as vehicle repairs/service and fuel and lubricants consumption, and reports the due service mileage in good time;
- Comply with the official highway code and traffic rules and regulations while driving, as well as the relevant LWF policies and procedures;
- Convey staff, visitors, and any other authorized personnel on official duty as well as program equipment and materials safely and securely;
- Ensure all vehicle doors and windows are securely locked after working hours, before handing over the keys to the Logistics Officer or at the nearest central police station while on over mission.
- Promptly report to the Logistics Officer and/or the Police all accidents and problems encountered while on duty;
- Ensure all none staff sign for accident waiver before boarding LWF vehicle and all accident waivers MUST be approved before embarking on the journey.
- Ensure the vehicles are well equipped with first aid kits at all times.
Motor-vehicle Repair: (70%)
- Responsible for conducting physical repairs and maintenance of the entire fleet;
- Prepare maintenance schedules for the fleet.
- Prepare reports on trends and common problems and contribute to developing solutions & share them with the security head.
- Facilitate vehicle servicing and repairs as needed. Verify repair/service done by external mechanics upon return of the vehicle from a garage to confirm all the required parts are replaced;
- Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle: carry out driver-responsible tasks as detailed by a supervisor, perform other repairs and arrange for external repairs and ensure that the vehicle is kept clean and in good working condition;
- Log official trips, daily mileage, and gas/fuel consumption, and assist with the annual vehicle inspection.
- Provide advice on the procurement of spare parts and assist in getting quotations.
- Ensure that LWF Rules and Regulations steps are taken in case of any involvement in accidents.
- Any other tasks/duties assigned by the head of the section and/or direct supervisor.
Other:
- Undertake other related duties as may reasonably be assigned by the Supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Secondary Education (High school or equivalent) with an additional four (4) years of relevant experience is required;
- A Valid Driving License for classes B, CM, DL, DM, etc., and a Certificate in Motor vehicle Mechanics is a must;
- Relevant experience in vehicle physical repairs, and maintenance of atleast 4 years is required;
- A valid Ugandan Driver’s License for operating manual transmission vehicles is required;
- Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Office) is desired;
- Experience working in a Humanitarian Field is desired.
- Fluency in English (fluency in speaking, writing, and reading) is required;
- Certificate in Defensive Driving is desirable.
