WIU has been a leading provider of access to university education, post-primary education, and vocational training for conflict-affected Africans since 1996.
About the Project:
With funding from the COH (Convoy of Hope), WIU is implementing the School Feeding Project targeting children in Early Childhood Development (ECD) classes with the aim of increasing learning and attendance at ECD Centers. The project is also enhancing nutrition and child health and decreasing morbidity for the ECD learners.
The project is being implemented in Palorinya, Imvepi and Rhino Camp Refugee Settlements across The West Nile Region of Uganda. WIU therefore seeks to recruit a suitably qualified person to support the project in the following position.
Job Summary: Be directly responsible for undertaking the activities of agriculture/school gardening at schools assigned to him/her, and the delivery and distribution of project assistance, materials and items in accordance with the project description and budget provisions as detailed in the agreements, and as assigned by the Project Officer.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
The Project Assistant – Agriculture shall be responsible to the Settlement Manager, for the execution of his/her duties, which shall include the following:
- Work with the Settlement Manager to initiate and coordinate the planning of the Agricluture/school gardening activities in liaison with other project staff, the school administration, as well as the community,
- Ensure optimum utilization of Project resources at minimum cost for high quality production in order to ensure continuity of school feeding program.
- In collaboration with the Settlement Manager, liaise, consult and work in partnership and cooperation with relevant District, sub-county departments and institutions, NGOs, CSOs,
- and local leaders in order to achieve the objectives, and facilitate project implementation of the agriculture programming/school gardening.
- Assist the Settlement Manager in training and guiding project volunteers on best agronomic practices to impart sufficient knowledge required for maximum crop management and high production.
- Sensitize the community on the importance of school gardening as the only way through which the Children school feeding can be sustained over a long period of time and in the absence of donor funding.
- Regularly visit and provide support supervision for volunteers in all project sites.
- Collect and tabulate field data on project activities, and presents such data in forms of reports. It is upon such evidences that decision for next course of actions by managements shall be made.
- Adequately document, report and follow up on concerns regarding safe and secure learning environment to children to ensure friendly structures for Children with Disabilities (CWDs).
- Perform any other official duties that may, from time to time, be requested and/or assigned by the Settlement Manager, Nutritionist, the Project Manager, or his/her designate.
- Assist in the establishment of demonstration gardens and other agricultural innovations

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- A minimum of diploma in applicable agriculture – with specialization in crop production from a recognized institution.
- A minimum of two years of experience in practicing agriculture, or practice of applicable agriculture from the institute is required.
- Skills in set-up, installation and management of irrigation systems
- Skills in diseases and pest management.
- Skills in Microsoft office (Words, Excel and PowerPoint)
- Interpersonal relationship
- Skills in post-harvest management.
