Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The KM Specialist will be responsible for a wide variety of activities related to identifying, managing, packaging, and disseminating key information to advance technical practice and provide practitioners with the tools they need to achieve TB control results. Specifically, the KM Specialist will lead and support the development of KM products, coordinate learning events, conduct research, produce resources and guidance, and facilitate ongoing content development and engagement. The KM Specialist will support the project team to use traditional and digital learning approaches to develop and implement innovative, creative, and effective ways to strategically capture and share technical knowledge, leverage good practices, and improve the effectiveness of the program.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Knowledge Management
- Design and implement effective learning activities – in collaboration with other project team members, work with clients to scope and implement appropriate and effective knowledge capture and sharing activities
- Coordinate deliberate and systematic learning opportunities during project implementation, harvest and disseminate lessons on a monthly and quarterly basis
- Document and share learning – ensure requirements, lessons learned, and best practices for products, events, and other knowledge management activities are clear and documented
- Build capacity for the generation of knowledge products by the different stakeholders at the project, National, and sub-national levels
- Work collaboratively with peers on the project team including the Technical Advisors, monitoring evaluation and learning team, National and district stakeholders to ensure alignment, and cohesion of KM products
- Manage knowledge-sharing events – in collaboration with the project team, scope and manage the successful execution of periodic knowledge-sharing events such as peer learning sessions, workshops and conferences
- Identify and curate technical website content – in collaboration with the project’s technical team, manage and implement project-wide content strategies to ensure that the right knowledge is getting to the right people at the right time (and in the right way)
- Manage website community engagement – Respond to website members in a timely manner and engage them in meaningful knowledge exchange
- identify and share more creative, efficient, and effective ways to engage audiences and facilitate knowledge-sharing and collaboration
- Ensure that quality work is delivered on time
- Support the development of annual, quarterly, and monthly work plans and periodic reports Communications
- Identify topics for documentation, collect information through interviews and on-the-ground research and observation, and determine appropriate mediums for documentation and dissemination
- Develop a communications strategy for the LPHS-TB Activity through which materials will be shared and communicated
- Write, edit, and, design project materials, including project reports, success stories, monthly update articles, brochures, and blog posts
- Provide support to the Project Director when needed, including handling communication on supported hospitals, MOH, and Partners and presenting project work at high-level meetings and conferences
- Any other duties assigned by the Supervisor/Project or Director

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience or master’s degree with 3+ years of experience (preferred) in social sciences, knowledge management, organizational learning, public health, international development
- Demonstrated understanding of knowledge management principles and capacity to deliver knowledge management and/or organizational learning activities
- Demonstrated capacity to deliver knowledge management in health programs and/or organizational learning programs
- At least three years relevant experience in TB and HIV/AIDS service delivery systems strengthening programs
- Experience in designing and conducting implementation research projects
- Experience in working with USAID/PEPFAR funded projects is an added advantage
- Demonstrated coordination, teamwork, planning, and analytical skills to measure the outcomes of the project’s activities and support project supervision
- Proven expertise in quantitative and qualitative methodologies, operations research, health management information systems, reporting, data quality assessments, data analysis, presentation, and publication
- Proficiency in word processing and Microsoft office
- Substantive Knowledge Management Outputs or high-quality peer-reviewed publications
- Proven ability to conceptualize, innovate and execute ideas, as well as transfer knowledge and skills
- Strong technical skills including the ability to process and analyse data using one or more statistical software packages including at least one of the following: SPSS, EPi-Info, STATA, MS Access and Excel data analytics
- Ability to link content development and engagement strategies that facilitate timely, useful delivery of information through project learning platforms and activities
- Excellent facilitation, program/activity management, and written and oral communication skills
