We are an international NGO committed to environmental protection active in almost 100 countries. WWF has a growing conservation Programme in the Republic of Uganda. WWF Uganda Country Office (WWF UCO) works with central and local government agencies, private sector, civil society organizations (CSOs) and the local communities to implement its various conservation programmes on Energy and Climate, Forestry and Wildlife, and Freshwater in Uganda.
Job Summary: Within the framework of the on-going projects” the Volunteer’s, shall work with the programme staff to provide project and field level technical, supervisory, and facilitative roles to ensure day to day effective and efficient implementation of project workplans in WWF UCO priority landscapes of conservation. Primary responsibilities shall include community mobilization and sensitization, strengthening capacity of community forest wildlife and water resources user groups and farmers, support in beneficiary selection and registration, day to day support to local governments, Civil Society Organizations, local communities and project partners to implement conservation initiatives, project coordination, monitoring and reporting.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support capacity strengthening of Forest, Wildlife and Water resource user community / groups in awareness creation to participate in the implementation of the environmental protection and conservation initiatives with special emphasis on youths, women and other vulnerable groups.
- Ensure that WWF UCO implementing partners mainstream the WWF social policies on gender, human rights, inclusion of indigenous peoples, and poverty in their programmes
- Assist the programme units in enrolment of beneficiaries to participate in project initiatives including administering the expression of interest templates, conduct baseline assessment of to be conserved areas,
- Support preparation, development and implementation of community forest, wildlife and Watershed management Plans with participation of all stakeholders.
- Carry out training of local work teams/groups/individual communities and farmers for adoption of conservation initiatives such as sustainable forest, wildlife and water management standards, measures and practices.
- Act as “ambassadors of conservation” with in the local communities by advocating for conservation of Biodiversity, Forest, Wildlife and water resources.
- Provide a communication channel between Forest, Wildlife and Water resource user groups local governments and the programme implementation Units.
- Support the projects to carry out accurate data gathering, processing, participate in timely analysis and reporting using standard scientific developed templates, tools, processes and systems.
- Participate in developing and implementation of training designs and modules, activity work plans and organize training programs from time to time in relation to the project implementation. Organize training sessions and exchange learning visits for farmers, counterparts and community members.
- Support programme staff in overseeing and supervise Forests, Wildlife and Fresh Water day to day activities, organize, and conduct regular meetings when required.
- Advise the farmers on the site species matching before planting most and suitable spacing for each of the tree species both exotic and indigenous and appropriate tending operations.
- Offer support during the distribution of conservation materials such as seedlings and other agro-inputs to beneficiaries and maintain accurate records during supply, delivery and the entire distribution chain.
- Write monthly reports detailing activities conducted during the month and submitting reports to the programme staff at the end on every month.
- Supervise the Planting of the trees by farmers while giving technical advisory service, plus post planting management
- Prepare appropriate, situational, monthly, quarterly progress reports on the project, in collaboration with local governments, Civil Society Organizations, local communities and project partners.
- Other duties as required and directed by the immediate supervisor
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal applicant must hold a relevant Degree in Environment Management, Social and Entrepreneur Forestry, Agriculture or another relevant field.
- At least two years’ experience in implementing Forest, Wildlife, and water conservation initiatives in the field
- Experience in working with in a multidisciplinary team as a considerate team player;
- A good understanding of the people centered conservation initiatives
- Experience working with local governments and the local communities in varied cultures.
- Familiarity working with National and local stakeholders (National Forest Authority, Uganda Wildlife Authority, National Environment Management Authority, District local governments, Ministry of Water and Environment.
- Ability to develop and deliver conservation work in the field with linkage to people, nature and livelihoods
- Qualitative and quantitative Data collection and analysis skills and the use of Geographic Information systems (GIS) are an added advantage
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with local governments, local NGOs, and community groups;
- Ability to communicate publicly (written and oral) and with a wide range of audiences, particularly the local communities.
- Ability to convey the work of WWF with confidence and credibility;
- Good team player with the ability to also work well under own initiative;
- Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively;
- Competency with standard word processing, spreadsheet and another computer programmes
- Fluency in written and spoken English;
