HI has recently set up a regional structure encompassing the countries of Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda with Uganda as the regional hub. The region is known as the East African Region (EAR). HI is currently inviting suitable applicants for the role of Education Research Specialist to support the Education Projects in Uganda as per the research protocol underway.
Job Summary: Reporting to the Regional Inclusive Education Technical Specialist, the Education Research Specialist will ensure the development (Protocol & administrative authorizations), the implementation (data collection, management of qualitative surveyors; field -work monitoring; data processing & analysis) and the dissemination of research findings (report writing and sharing) of the DiDa (Disability Data in schools in Emergencies and protracted crises project) Schools project.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Task 1: Design the methodology of the research
- To write the protocol in collaboration with HI colleagues & partners (with a minimum: objectives (general & specific), target population, location, study design, selection of participants, data collection, data analysis, quality monitoring mechanisms, time schedule, budget, ethics considerations)
- To ensure that the methodology will be gender and disability sensitive
- To create data collection tools (interviews guideline, questionnaire …)
- To define quality insurance mechanisms
- To obtain the necessary national authorizations for the successful completion of the research (especially ethics review)
Task 2: Plan and implement the research
- To lead and coordinate the implementation of the research
- To lead the recruitment, train and manage translators/ data collectors
- To collect data on the field (respecting the agreed methodology).
- To ensure data processing and analysis (in collaboration with the HI Uganda/EAR team)
Task 3: Ensure the research uptake (research & learning products)
- To produce research related products: 1 research report, 1 comprehensive infographic, 1 briefing paper
- To produce learning products related to CFM-TV: 1 guideline (training of trainers) and series of webinars
- To coordinate the translation of products
- To share the findings in diverse arena (internally and externally) and through diverse supports (webinar, conference…)
Task 4: Define research governance mechanisms & ensure reporting
- To define Terms of Reference of the Advisory Committee and facilitate meetings
- To ensure monitoring and reporting of project’s progress towards the expected results
Task 5: Ensure the administrative follow-up of the research
- To manage the budget for the implementation of the research
- Ensure that the implementation is in line with the administrative, time and financial requirements
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Training: PhD in humanities (sociology/ anthropology) or political sciences or public health/ health measurements/ epidemiolog
Or
- Master’s level 2 in in humanities (sociology/ anthropology) or political sciences or public health/ health measurements/ epidemiology
- Years of experience: Minimum of 2 years’ experience of Research/ MEAL functions
- Experience in designing, planning and conducting qualitative and quantitative researches (e.g. research/ MEAL officer)
- Proven and recognized experience in following methodologies: cognitive testing; reliability analysis (intra/ inter rater variability), qualitative analysis (face to face qualitative interviews and focus group discussions)
- Experience of at least 2 years in NGOs in various contexts of intervention
- Experience in the field of Disability data production
- Experience in the field of Inclusive Education
- Proven experience in quantitative/ qualitative data collection, processing and analysis
- Experience in conducting studies including people with disabilities (e.g. adaptation of communication tools or materials)
- Experience in designing learning material
- Familiar with contexts in similar to Uganda and others humanitarian contexts
- Able to deal with all research cycle steps (from design to findings sharing)
- Excellent knowledge of research ethics standards
- Excellent analytical, synthesis and writing skills (research products)
- Presenting in workshops/ conferences/ webinar
- Communicates in a clear, concise and responsible way respecting the interlocutor; adapt its communication method and its message, especially in the context of intercultural communication
- Knowledge of project cycle/ project management
- Knowledge of ethics standards in humanitarian contexts
- Good knowledge of the office pack (Excel and others)
- Excellent knowledge of quantitative data analysis software (Stata, SPSS or other)
- Excellent knowledge of qualitative data analysis software (N’Vivo)
- Proficiency in written and oral institutional communication in English
- Autonomy in the organization of work
- Excellent reactivity and flexibility
- Capacity to organize s/her work, and manage priorities
- Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills
- Resilient to stress and uncertainty
- Work in a team / network, cooperate
- Ability to build relationships over short periods of time
