Programme Coordinator Job Opportunity – SOS Faim Belgium
Job Title: Programme Coordinator
Organisation: SOS Faim Belgium
Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda
Type of agreement: Consultancy agreement
Starting date: July 2022
Duration: 6 months (renewable and possibly evolving towards a permanent employment)
About US:
The Belgian NGO “SOS Faim” will implement a new programme in Uganda for the period 2022 – 2026. This programme is co-financed by the Belgian Ministry of Cooperation (DGD) and co-led by the SIA consortium (SOS Faim, Iles de Paix, Autre Terre – SOS Faim and Iles de Paix being the only ones actives in Uganda).
In the framework of the implementation of this programme and its support activities to NGOs and CSO Networks in Uganda, SOS Faim Belgium is looking for a Programme Coordinator experienced in advocacy for agroecological transition and sustainable food systems and in at least one of the two following fields:
- Inclusive finance (Microfinance, management of SACCOs…)
- Gender dynamics
Overview of the Programme
SOS Faim currently works in partnership with more than 60 organizations based in 8 countries: Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mali, Peru, DRC, Senegal and Uganda. More information can be found on our website: https://www.sosfaim.be/en/homepage/.
In Uganda, our programme aims to improve the living conditions of farmers and social economy actors through the co-construction of sustainable and resilient food systems and environment, and with a specific attention for youth and women. The improved living conditions include increased income, better nutrition, guaranteed food and nutrition security, reduced work arduousness, ensuring fundamental rights, reduced gender inequalities, improved housing and protected natural resources.
To contribute to this vision, all programme actions aim to achieve the desired situation, in which target actors strengthen their commitment to jointly building sustainable food systems (SFS) and a healthy environment. Dominant food systems contribute to keeping small-scale producer’s poor and food insecure, while destroying ecosystems. There is now a scientific consensus that a radical shift in our food systems towards greater sustainability is needed to ensure food and nutrition security for all and to achieve the SDGs while preserving the environment. Therefore, the hypothesis is that the emergence of more sustainable food systems is a lever to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable actors in the system, namely farmers, as well as other actors of the social and solidarity economy (artisans, small entrepreneurs), who are the main target actors of the programme. In order to achieve sustainability, it is essential that this change be driven by the actors themselves, who must be empowered to do so.
The agroecological transition is one of the main ways to radically transform food systems as a whole, as advocated by the UN Committee on Food Security (HLPE 2020 report). Indeed, the principles of agroecology emphasise the right to food and the participation of vulnerable groups and women in food strategies, promote regenerative practices and focus on the diversity and resilience of the entire food system.
SOS Faim and its partners will contribute to the programme vision by focusing on the following areas of change:
- Agroecological production methods and sustainable environmental management
- Fair and sustainable collection, storage, processing and marketing systems
- Inclusive territorial development supporting the co-construction of sustainable food systems and sustainable environmental management
- National and international public policies realising the rights of the farmers and other SSE actors.
- Engagement and mobilisation of citizens for the development of SFS and global and solidarity-based citizenship
- Women’s participation at different levels of environmental and SFS management
- The programme will be implemented with 5 local partner organizations.
