About US:

War Child Canada (WCC) is a registered Canadian charity and operating in the Middle East and South Asia regions (Afghanistan, Iraq, and Jordan) and Sub-Saharan Africa (Sudan, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda).

 

Currently, WCC is implementing Education and Protection/Access to justice programs for refugees and host communities in Adjumani and Isingiro districts and expanding to additional six refugee hosting districts.

 

Job Summary:  Reporting to the Program Manager, the Senior Legal Officer is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the War Child Canada’s, Uganda, Legal Aid Clinic Services in Adjumani district.  He/ She coordinates all the activities the department is to undertake including clients’ management, awareness raising, legal trainings and representing SGBV survivors and children in the courts of law. The job holder supervises the work and builds up the capacity of the legal team comprising of Legal Officer and Training and Outreach Officer and engaged in the strategic development of the War Child Canada “Legal Defense Program for Women and Children in Northern Uganda”. He/ She oversees ensuring a solid and effective cooperation with key partners of War Child Canada.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Advocate for the principles, goals and objectives of WCC Uganda Legal Protection Program, including Legal Aid Services to SGBV survivors and Children.
  • Facilitate the provision of legal and human rights awareness education to clients and communities, including through the media/radio programs.
  • Provide legal advice to clients and Legal Officers on complex matters.
  • Together with Legal Officers, determine which cases should go to court for representation.
  • Give legal options to victims of GBV and children seeking legal redress
  • Develop, implement, and review detail monthly, quarterly, and annual project work plans
  • Preparing all necessary case documents and represent SGBV survivors and children in the courts of law.
  • Facilitate and coordinate referral of SGBV survivors for other services, such as healthcare.




Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
  • Diploma in Legal Practice/enrolled Advocate with a valid practicing certificate
  • Four to six years of relevant Legal Aid Provision experience.
  • Knowledge of legal frameworks, human rights frameworks, and refugee law
  • Ability to manage and supervise field teams composed of different profile of staff members
  • Applicants for this position should be highly motivated and task oriented to achieve clear objectives within a specific period.
  • They must be mature persons with sound judgment, good leadership skills, good analytical skills, ability to communicate both orally and in writing, ability to work as a team and motivate a team, and work under minimum supervision.

 

Desirable:   

  • Experience working at a global organization, charity or law firm is an asset
  • Able to travel, at times at short notice, and spend time away from work base and home.
