The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is a United Nations office that was established in 1997 to assist the UN in better addressing a coordinated, comprehensive response to the interrelated issues of illicit trafficking in and abuse of drugs, crime prevention and criminal justice, international terrorism, and political corruption. These goals are pursued through three primary functions: research, guidance and support to governments in the adoption and implementation of various crime-, drug-, terrorism-, and corruption-related conventions, treaties and protocols, as well as technical/financial assistance to said governments to face their respective situations and challenges in these fields.
Job Summary: Applications are sought for one internship position within the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme of the Regional Office for Eastern Africa of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC ROEA). The internship programme offers a practical educational experience in the field of criminal justice and provides interns with the opportunity to work in a multicultural intergovernmental organization. The position is for six months starting in February 2022, UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the direct supervision of professional staff of the Section.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme with the review and drafting of publications, project documents, briefing materials and other documents.
- Support the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme with the organization and preparation of events and workshops. The intern may be expected to gather documentation, coordinate the agenda and other related materials;
- Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points and speeches.
- Assist the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme with the drafting of web stories and other materials to be published in UNODC’s website, as well as other social media related tasks;
- Assist with administrative tasks including drafting of terms of reference, following up with vendors, review of invoices and other financial documentations, travels logistics for meeting participants.
- Perform other tasks as necessary.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Intern – Administration must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent), preferably in business administration, finance, accounting, procurement or related courses. (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views
- No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
- Languages: For this internship fluency in English, oral and written, is required.
