Job Summary: The Research Assistant’s main responsibility is to attain consent and assent from caregivers, teachers and children and to be able to collect quality data while observing confidentiality at all times as per the set WCH standard using an electronic device with Kobo application. Research assistants will also conduct interviews and focus group discussions with the selected research participants. The job demands accurate data collection and reporting using an electric device with the Kobo application.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Attend and participate in the study training and practice to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out the data collection.
- Seek consent from caregivers for their children to participate in the study. Seek assent from children.
- Conduct surveys with caregivers, teachers and children following the set prescribed guidelines.
- Enter responses accurately (without alterations or omissions) during the interviews onto the tablet using Kobo.
- Liaise with the Supervisor on reporting issues to ensure understanding and to maintain accuracy.
- Conduct key informant interviews and focus group discussions with caregivers, education staff and other stakeholders
- Work within a team and have a professional and ethical attitude towards all the research stakeholders (upholding child safeguarding principles at all times).
- Use feedback provided by supervisors positively to improve on data collection quality.
- Able and willing to travel with other research assistants in Isingiro district (transport is provided).
- Attend and participate in meetings when needed.
- Transcribe the qualitative interviews conducted in a format provided by the research coordinator
- Translate research materials that might need to be translated.
- Support with mobilization of research participants and other stake holders involved in the research
- Any other duties as assigned by the Research Coordinator in fulfillment of the tasks.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Diploma or certificate in Education, Social sciences, Development Studies, Health, Child Protection, M&E, etc or at least a minimum of A’ level education qualification.
- A degree in the above will be an added advantage
- At least one year of experience in data collection using electronic devices with applications such as KOBO/ODK/Redcap is desirable.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in conducting surveys preferably with children and adults in the community setting.
- Experience in research, monitoring and evaluation is desirable.
- Must be able to speak, read and write in English and a minimum of one local language (Runyankole and/or Swahili).
- Must have experience working with children
- Good communication skills (both written and spoken).
- Experience working in a humanitarian context i.e., challenging environment with limited oversight
- Experience working with relevant stakeholders i.e., engaging with caregivers, /parents, teachers and children.
- Must be a resident within or around Isingiro or Mbarara districts
- Able to meet deadlines and communicate delays effectively
- Having a positive and solution-oriented mindset is a plus.
- Be a child friendly person and act in the best interest of a child
- Ability to document and produce concise, informative and appropriate written documentation
- Excellent interpersonal skills and note-taking skills.
- Should have facilitation and interview skills. i.e., ability to transcribe qualitative interviews.
