Job Title:  Deputy Laboratory Manager

About US:

The UVRI-IAVI HIV Vaccine Program (the Program), founded in 2001, is a not for profit organization with offices and research facilities based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe.  The Program’s main activities are conducting research, building capacity and providing advocacy for HIV/AIDS vaccine as well as molecular and epidemiological work toward HIV prevention. The Program is mainly funded by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), USA but also receives funding from other donors.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs support tasks to assist the laboratory manager in overseeing laboratory projects and operations to ensure the laboratory delivers on its mandate to provide accurate, reliable and timely results to clients.
  • Supervise the day to day operations of the laboratory and ensuring that problems encountered with testing are quickly resolved
  • Overseeing the purchase and validation of new assays and equipment
  • Reviewing research protocols to identify and plan for the implications on laboratory operations, develop analytical plans and source for back up analytical services
  • In liaison with the QA manager, ensure compliance with GCLP standards and the quality management plan, timely resolution both internal and external audit findings.
  • Ensuring timely review and development of departmental SOPs
  • Overseeing the proper maintenance, repair and servicing of laboratory equipment
  • Ensuring that samples are properly processed, stored and that accurate, reliable and timely results are released
  • Supervising the laboratory technologists, technicians and trainees in a manner that empowers them to operate according to best practice and deliver high standards of customer service
  • Identifying activities which need to be carried out by the laboratory, develop work plans and duty rosters
  • Ensuring that staff are properly trained and their competencies assessed routinely
  • Developing appropriate budgets and ensuring effective utilization of the finances associated with the laboratory department





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Masters in Laboratory Sciences or Clinical Pathology
  • At least two years in research
  • Must be registered with the Allied Health Profession’s council
  • Leadership skills
  • Good Communicator
  • Attention to detail
  • Computer skills and report writing
