Job Summary: The Hygiene and Sanitation Assistant will be responsible for daily hygiene promotion in the Samaritan’s Purse Uganda (SPUG) Urban WASH (UWASH) Project operational area and will promote good hygiene and sanitation practices through the project, assisting the slum communities in adopting healthy behaviors. S/he will collect and, with the support of the Hygiene and Sanitation Officer, analyze data to identify community needs to influence planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work closely with KCCA, LCs, Community Health Educators (CHEs), church leaders, and hygiene and sanitation clusters to implement hygiene promotion activities at community level.
- Supervise/Support CHEs attached to hygiene and sanitation promotion to execute their duties effectively. Conduct outreaches to discuss hygiene and sanitation care concerns with community members and to
- encourage more people to actively participate.
- With the support of the Hygiene and Sanitation Officer, establish/activate WASH health clubs in schools, actively participating in the implementation of WASH health club activities.
- Establish and support the WASH Committees (Water User Committees, Toilet User Committees, etc.). Complete regular (i.e. daily, weekly, monthly) activity reports, working closely with the Hygiene and Sanitation Officer to monitor and maintain project progress to ensure goals are achieved on time, evaluating challenges as they arise and proposing solutions.
- Uphold a high standard of quality by ensuring activities adhere to technical and government standards, and are aligned with internal and external strategic objectives.
- Conduct all activities in the most cost-effective and efficient manner, in coordination with team members, other departments and in line with SPUG, government and donor policies and best practices.
- Participate in morning devotions and maintain a strong Christian witness to colleagues, project stakeholders, project beneficiaries, and the general public.
- Any other duties as assigned
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must agree with and uphold the mission and objectives of the organization.
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Science, or any other related discipline.
- At least one (1) year experience in a similar role within the NGO sector
- Proficient in Microsoft Office packages (Excel, Word and PowerPoint). Must hold a valid Class A and B driver’s permit.
- Strong communication skills, with experience in training facilitation.
- Willingness to travel to and be based in the field; a generous and serving spirit. Commitment to empathy, integrity, responsibility, transparency and efficiency.
