Job Summary: The Adolescent Officer; with the guidance from the Adolescent Advisor will work to ensure quality coordination of implementation of the Adolescent strategies and interventions. The Adolescent Officer will ensure that, all the adolescent development and reproductive health activities support the achievement of project adolescent health and nutrition. The position will ensure that, all deliverables related to adolescent health development are delivered in a timely fashion and key lessons learned and best practices captured based on the state of art ASRH practices and capture lessons learned. In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.
The Adolescent Officer will be the responsible for implementing the adolescent safe space model under the project, which will use a small group approach to reach adolescents age 10-19 with age-segmented content (with a primary focus on 10-14 year olds). Through this approach, the project will give at least 22,400 young people with civic and transferable, sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, WASH, and foundational numeracy and literacy skills and messages. The Adolescent Officer guided by the Adolescent Coordinator will provide guidance in the activity implementation on the adolescent safe spaces. This staff will manage a selection of mentors and their training as well as supportive supervision. This staff will monitor quality implementation of the adolescent curriculum within the safe space, as well as collaborate on the trainings for VHT on adolescent and youth friendly health services. They will guide mentors in setting up community dialogues on adolescent wellbeing.
The staff will also ensure the adolescent component has strong alignment and linkages with the project SBC framework, and is well aligned with the other project components to support achievement of the health and nutrition goal.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant for the Save the Children Adolescent Officer job placement must hold a bachelor’s degree in Public Health, health services management or related field or equivalent accrued working experience (at least 3 years), on related field and demonstrated experience in implementation of community projects and working in field-based teams.
- A post graduate training at master’s level in public health or related field is a plus.
- Extensive experience implementing adolescent development, health promotion, family planning, MCHN, or similar programs in Uganda
- Experience with small- group or “safe spaces” programs for adolescents
- Proven skills in computer programs (Word, Excel; minimum)
- Excellent skills in report writing and meeting dead lines
Desirable
- Demonstrated problem solving skills, collaboration experience, creativity and willingness to innovate;
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to lead and work effectively in team situations;
- Familiarity and understanding of USAID policies and procedures, or those of other donors, or those of donor-funded projects or community-based projects;
- Fluent oral and strong analytical, written English communication skills is required;
- Demonstrates Save the Children’s core values of accountability, collaboration, integrity, ambition, and creativity.
- Willingness to be based in the Karamoja sub-region (Amudat) for months at a time, with frequent travel to field sites within the sub-region.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a complex, multi-intervention health development program in collaboration with national health ministries and international partners
- Demonstrated experience managing staff and budgets across a large geographic area
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with a diverse team and field based partners and counterparts
- Commitment to producing high quality program deliverables on time and under budget
- Ensure gender perspectives in the scope of work
