Job Title:    Regional Communication and Public Relations Officer (RCPRO)

Duty Station:  Kampala, Uganda

Reports to: Regional Business Development and Communications Manager (RBDCM)

Type of contract: Fixed term – Renewable.

Duration: Two years, with possibility of extension.

Stromme Foundation (SF) is a Norwegian International Non-Governmental Organisation. From its Head Office in Kristiansand, Norway, SF works through a field structure comprising of Regional and Country Offices in East and West Africa, and Asia to implement projects in the areas of creating Employment and job opportunities, promoting Inclusive Education (IE) and strengthening the capacity of local communities. SF’s field structure works closely with local partners in implementing projects and programmes.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Development and implementation of Communications strategy,
  2. Brand visibility and consistency,
  3. Production of marketing and communications materials,
  4. Public Relations and Information management,
  5. Fundraising and donor management support, and
  6. Management of Base Camp Foundation partnership and Youth Act Now program.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

Strategy development

  • Support the development of SFEA’s regional communication strategy targeting key audiences, including the public, media, private and public development partners, and other NGOs in the region. Work in close collaboration with the Communication and Marketing Department to strengthen communication channels between SF-KRS (Head Office) and the region.
  • Support the development of a digital strategy that responds to SF business objectives and online user requirements.
  • Lead on delivery of the digital and Communication strategies to increase SFEA’s visibility and showcase the organisation as the ‘go-to’ agency for future partnerships through:
    • Social media engagement (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Blogs, etc),
    • SFEA website and affiliated platforms’ content development,
    • Event management; public holidays, partner events, etc
    • Media engagement including press, TV, radio, online media, offline media, key influencers,
    • Youth Act Now and Alumni engagement including contact database management,
    • Developing targets to track SFEA’s visibility including website and social media engagement, and
    • Sharing programmes outputs and research in creative ways with SF audiences to entice them in SF work.
  • Define staff responsibilities for marketing and communications activities and supporting them to deliver.
  • Drive communication at the regional level by guiding and coordinating the work of communication focal points in offices and projects in the region.

Brand Visibility and Consistency

  • Manage SF brand, ensuring it is understood and used effectively by staff and helps achieve SF goals and mission.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication channels with relevant opinion leaders, social media operatives, news services, editors, etc. to encourage accurate reporting of SF’s activities. Develop and maintain media and other contacts lists. Actively seeks to leverage SF communications for a wider audience and greater impact.
  • Organize media coverage and arrange for interviews and briefings. Respond to enquiries from the media or the public.
  • Ensure SF branding is visible and used according to guidelines on all external materials, including through supporting and informing other staff and partners.
  • Identify relevant opportunities to increase SF’s visibility, where this will add value to SF brand.
  • Manage branding of all SF and SF’s funded equipment and property.
  • Build staff capacity through training sessions, briefing notes and individual support to ensure all staff have gone through identity and branding induction.

Marketing and Communication materials

  • Pro-actively identify the need for, draft, produce and edit information products such as electronic newsletters, annual reports, op-eds, brochures, press releases, social media material, and contributions to audio/visual programmes and articles for SF target audiences.
  • Prepare material and contribute to the SF website and social media channels. Assume editorial responsibility for content.
  • Take photographs, establish, and maintain SFEA photo library. Prepare video content and draft scripts.
  • Produce high-quality stories, case studies and quotes demonstrating the impact of SF’s work for a range of audiences. Establish and maintain a library of stories, case studies and quotes.
  • Support with development of high-quality scripts for radio programmes.
  • Design and coordinate procurement of branded materials such as T-shirts, banners, leaflets, calendars, etc.
  • Contribute to marketing and communications initiatives instigated by SF-KRS as required.
  • Update SFEA website with new and relevant information.

Public Relations and Information management

  • Draft and edit speeches for regional management as well as briefing documents, and various correspondence, including those required by senior management at SF-KRS.
  • Maintain SFEA contacts database.
  • Develop and manage a system of coherent, regular, and relevant communication with SFEA staff, partners, Head Office, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Manage SFEA’s social media and public email accounts and responding to enquiries as well as sharing communications with relevant staff that come through the different account.
  • Train and provide individual support to staff to observe communication protocols.
  • Work with SF-KRS on the most effective advocacy campaigns and communication for development opportunities, including identifying possible advocates and overseeing their activities.

Fundraising and Donor Management Support

  • Support regional and country level SFEA’s fundraising activities through effective advocacy strategies and activities.
  • In close consultation with relevant departments in SF-KRS, draft timely inputs into regular progress reports and major donor reports for submission to SF donors.
  • Support fundraising activities such as proposal writing and partner meetings.
  • Support donor management activities such as report writing, events organisation, donor visits, etc.

Management of Base Camp Foundation partnership and Youth Act Now program

  • Support RBDCM to closely follow up the Base Camp Foundation (BCF) partnership; ensuring timely and quality implementation as approved, required information to BCF donors is given as and when required in a qualitative and timely basis and organise / facilitate donor visits to BCF.
  • Organize for and orient donor groups or individuals visiting the region and ensure they experience a memorable time. These may include corporate company teams, school teams, visitors from funding partners and volunteer youth coming on exchange program.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study such as Communications, Journalism, International relations, and social sciences.

Experience, Skills, and Competences

  • At least five years’ experience of working for an INGO in a similar position or an external relations capacity.
  • Good understanding of internal and external communications, public relations, and marketing best practices.
  • Understands the best practices of social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc.
  • Experience coordinating digital campaigns to promote organization’s programs and policy influencing.
  • Experience of developing and/ producing IEC materials for external audiences such as donors, supporters, and public.
  • Ability to work in a multi-task and multi-deadline environment.
  • Ability to read, distil, and synthesise information from technical documents to produce clear and well written summaries.
  • Capability to write clear reports with good use of illustrative graphics.
  • Experience in video development and editing – ideally with experience in Adobe software and visual effects and animation.
  • Excellent writing, editing, designing, and photography skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong personal commitment to the values, aims and methods of SF.

Working Relationships

Internal:

Interacts daily with the Regional Business Development and Communications Manager, Youth Development Officer, Communications Intern, and SFEA staff.

External:

Interacts with national Governmental institutions, Non-Government Institutions, Academic Institutions, the media, donors, partners, Specialists, Consultants, and other Stakeholders.
