Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda’s largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970.


Job Summary: Provide expert support to all core/central information systems viz: (academic, research and administrative). Perform system tuning and recovery procedures for the university critical centralized systems and ensure high uptime, performance and security of the systems.


Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Plan and coordinate ICT training requirements for staff in their respective units in line Installation, management and maintenance of application servers and related university systems.
  • Investigate and analyze the feasibility of system requirements and develop system specifications to prevent problems and to improve systems performance;
  • Maintain operating systems, business applications and security tools;
  • Evaluate related hardware and software products and make recommendations for adoption;
  • Plan and recommend the redesign and configuration of operating systems and system applications;
  • Implement system installations, expansion, upgrades and improvements;
  • Automate tasks through scripting and the adoption of software/hardware tools;
  • Undertake periodic internal audits of all university systems;
  • Organize and schedule External System Audits;
  • Provide expert support for the information system applications in the respective units;
  • Participate in developing internal local software in liaison with the Systems Manager;
  • Backup and restore University Systems;
  • Analyze system logs and identify potential risk issues with University systems;
  • Troubleshoot any reported problems with University Systems;
  • Set up and implement security policies for users of all university core systems.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Master’s degree in Information Systems, Software Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Software Engineering
  • An Oracle certificate Association (OCA);
  • Certification in UNIX Systems administration.
  • Minimum of three (3) years working experience, in administration and management of Information Systems, open source platforms for systems, networks and databases
  • Knowledge of relevant programming languages particularly for web-based systems;
  • Knowledge in systems auditing and evaluation
  • Knowledge in other relational data base management systems (MYSQL, POSTGRESS and MS SQL Server)
  • Interpersonal & Communication skills;
  • Good conceptual skills;
  • Ability to initiate change
