About US:

The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF with support of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), the UNDP and FAO is implementing a project – “Fostering Sustainability and Resilience for Food Security in Karamoja sub-region.” The project is planned to contribute to enhancing long-term environmental sustainability and resilience of food production systems in the Karamoja Sub-Region. The 5 year project is being implemented in five districts of Moroto, Kotido, Nakapiripirit, Kaabong, Karenga and Nabilatuk in the Karamoja sub-region, head office based in Moroto.

 

Job Summary:  The Value Chains Specialist shall have overall objective of ensuring effective implementation of inclusive value chains activities for sustainable crop, livestock production and food security. This position shall be based in Karamoja Sub Region and involves giving technical assistance to farmers, farmer groups or organizations through innovative approaches that ensure value chains development and production of profitably competitive products for commercial markets and food security.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Take lead in technical assessment of the targeted value chains, bottlenecks and opportunities.
  • Undertake value chain analyses for selected crops, livestock and indigenous natural resources to identify inefficiencies that hinder value chains development, agro-processing and value addition.
  • Serve as the technical lead for designing, implementing and monitoring value chains production and marketing activities.
  • Identify capacity building needs that limit specific value chains development, competitiveness and inclusiveness and design and executing appropriate training tools.
  • Guide the design and implementation of inclusive value chains using farmer field school approach for the project.
  • Provide technical support and backstopping in agro-processing investments appraisal process, for the selected crops and livestock value chains, including specifications for equipment, inputs and services.
  • Participate in the collection and dissemination of relevant information for the targeted crops and livestock value chains in Karamoja sub region.
  • Participate in value chains development related meetings, conferences, workshops, consultations and field visits as may be required.
  • Undertake value chains cost-benefits, margins, cash-flow, product volumes analysis as may be required.
  • Provide technical guidance for participatory processes to engage farmers and other value chain actors in the project.
  • Identify required capacity building and skills development gaps that could be supported by the project
  • identifying value chain interventions and designing to formulate proposals to set up value chains
  • Supports FFS, CBOs, private sector and local cooperatives in the project area
  • Participate in developing and reviewing information materials, technical papers and guidelines on crops and livestock value chains development.
  • Support development and implementation of sustainable land use management, crops and livestock production, agro-processing and value addition and marketing related interventions
  • Coordinate the development and update of value chain actor’s collaboration within the project location.
  • Participate in collaborative initiatives, value chain studies conducted by government, development partners, private sector and any professional entities.
  • Work with the project team to implement activities that enhance crop and livestock productivity, market linkages, processing and value addition for profitability of the value chains.
  • Participate in analyzing technical and policy issues, strategies and programs that support development of competitive and inclusive value chains in Karamoja Sub region.
  • Identify, and establish potential private public partnerships as value chain actors to enhance crop and livestock productivity, market linkages for input and output marketing.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned from time to time.

 



Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology, Agribusiness Management, any other related courses from a recognized training institute.
  • Additional qualification or proven practical skills in value addition, agro- processing, food safety and product quality, hygiene management is an added advantage
  • A minimum of Five (5) years progressive and relevant experience is required
  • The required person shall have very good knowledge of; value chains development, agribusiness, good agronomic practices, agro-processing, value addition, food systems, and technologies for value chains development.
  • The candidate must also possess an excellent understanding of a value chains development approach involving use of farmer groups/farmer field schools.
