Junior Scientist – Natural Resource Management Jobs – World Agroforestry (ICRAF)

Job Title:    Junior Scientist - Natural Resource Management Organisation: World Agroforestry (ICRAF) Duty Station:  Kampala, Uganda   About US: World Agroforestry (ICRAF) is a Centre of scientific and development excellence that harnesses the benefits of trees for people and the environment. Leveraging the world's largest repository of agroforestry science and information, we develop knowledge practices, from farmers' fields to the global sphere, to ensure food security and environmental sustainability.   ICRAF is the only institution conducting globally significant agroforestry research in and for all of the developing tropics. Knowledge produced by ICRAF allows governments, development agencies, and farmers to use the power of trees to make farming livelihoods more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable at scales. We are headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and operate six regional programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Latin America.   On 1 January 2019, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF), two of the world's leading organizations focused on forestry and agroforestry, merged in order to provide the evidence and innovative solutions needed to scale up investment in sustainable development and address the global challenges of our time.   About EUTF Programme: The European Union Emergency Trust Fund (EUTF) is funding a programme in “Response to Increased Environmental Degradation and Promotion of Alternative Energy Sources in Refugee Hosting Districts. The action aims to increase environmental protection, forest restoration, and improve sustainable energy and alternative livelihoods by displaced populations and their host communities in Adjumani, Arua, Kiryandongo and Yumbe districts. The project will be implemented over a 4-yaer period by a five-member consortium led by Save the Children. The other members of the consortium include ENABEL, World Agroforestry (ICRAF), Joint Energy and Environment Programme and Vision for Humanity. The project will be implemented in close collaboration with District Local Governments in the project locations.   Job Summary:  ICRAF is seeking to recruit a Junior Scientist who will coordinate the field implementation action of the project in liaison with the various action partners.   Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • The incumbent will coordinate overall implementation of the EUTF action and other Natural Resources/Governance interventions in liaison with the various action partners;
  • They will further be responsible for handling the environment, energy, and climate change aspects of the action as well as act as a link between ICRAF and other project partners in implementation areas;
  • Fundraising, development of project concepts, budgets;
  • Cultivate meaningful and long-lasting partnerships with government, civil society, and other partners in the Agroforestry/Forestry arena;
  • Gender Integration.
  Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant must hold a Master of Science in Forestry/Agroforestry/Natural Resource Management from a reputable institution.
  • At least six years of experience working in environment and natural resources sector within Uganda with a bias in research for development.
  • Understanding of the environment-climate change and energy nexus especially in the displaced settings
  • Experience in undertaking scientific fieldwork, especially in the environmental area.
  • Ability to facilitate networks for policy influence and action at various levels.
  • Ability to work independently, in remote locations and coordinate multiple stakeholders.
  Personal attributes and competencies:
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to anticipate recognize and assess potential challenges.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Enthusiasm, good teamwork, collaboration, and an ability to work independently.
  • Good communication skills in English (Oral and Writing)
  • Ability to direct, guide and assist field teams in execution of their tasks.
  • Willingness to travel and work in the project areas for extended periods.
  Terms and conditions: This is a Nationally Recruited Position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration for its Locally Recruited Staff (LRS) in local currency, commensurate with skills and experience.
  • The appointment will be for a period of 2 years, inclusive of a 6-month probationary period, with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
  • The duty station will be in Uganda.
