About US:

Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) is a statutory body established by UNMA Act, 2012. The Act empowers UNMA to provide for the control and development of technically sound and scientific meteorological services in Uganda.

 

Job Summary:  The Director of Station Networks and Observations will set, harmonize, interpret and implement national, regional and international weather observation standards; and generate relevant data on weather at the national level.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Establish weather and climate needs (needs assessment) for stakeholders to guide them in their planning;
  • Establish Directorate’s resource needs (staff and finances) in light of national, regional and global requirements;
  • Set quality management systems to assure adherence and compliance to weather and climate related standards at national, regional and global level;
  • Customize regional and global weather observation standards to national circumstances relating to the key sectors;
  • Interpret weather and climate data needs of key sectors to mitigate disaster weather and climate related risks;
  • Generate evidence-based data and information for the design and development of a responsive station network (including; Synoptic, Agro-Met, Hydro-Met and Rainfall stations);
  • Produce reports on WMO on matters relating to station networks and observations;
  • Mobilize private-public partners to enhance weather observations in the country; and
  • Perform any other relevant duties as may be assigned to him/her by Supervisor.

 



Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal candidate must hold an Honors Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences, (Meteorology, Physics Chemistry, Geography) from a recognized University;
  • Must have a Master’s Degree in Meteorology or Environment studies or Agriculture or Forestry or Hydrology or Atmospheric sciences from a recognized University;
  • A Postgraduate qualification in Public Administration or Business Administration or Management Studies in Meteorology or ICT is an added advantage.
  • At least (8) eight years working experience in a related field with a reputable organization with minimum of three years of experience at Senior Managerial level.
  • Administration and organizational skills;
  • Computer, Financial Management and Communication skills;
  • Analytical, planning and Interpersonal skills;
  • Team leadership skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions on a day-to-day basis regarding management, allocation and control of funds and other resources; and
  • Ability to handle complex issues of an organization.
