Job Title:    Agriculture Extension Specialist Organisation: Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries (MAAIF) Project Name: “Fostering Sustainability and Resilience for Food Security in Karamoja sub-region” Project Duty Station:  Uganda Reports to: Project Coordinator SURE FS   About US: The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF with support of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), the UNDP and FAO is implementing a project – “Fostering Sustainability and Resilience for Food Security in Karamoja sub-region.” The project is planned to contribute to enhancing long-term environmental sustainability and resilience of food production systems in the Karamoja Sub-Region. The 5 year project is being implemented in five districts of Moroto, Kotido, Nakapiripirit, Kaabong, Karenga and Nabilatuk in the Karamoja sub-region, head office based in Moroto.   Job Summary:  The Agriculture Extension Specialist will provide technical guidance for the mobilization, training and cross-learning activities in support of crop/livestock production, natural resource management and value chain integration activities and guide the inter-linkages between targeted landscapes and identifying and supporting the application of appropriate agriculture extension methodologies that are gender inclusive and taking into account the socioeconomic dynamics as well as document lessons learnt and best practices in the application of these methodologies.   Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Support the PMU in integration of extension and gender activities into their work plans, activities, monitoring indicators and reports.
  • Enhance women participation in project activities and their access to information for improved agricultural production and integrated natural resource management.
  • Provide guidance to the project implementers on effective agricultural and agribusiness extension approaches
  • Evaluate, recommend and promote multiplication of appropriate and climate resilient agricultural practices/technologies/approaches for food security, climate adaptation and INRM.
  • Develop and promote household food security strategies
  • Identify training needs of extension teams and farmers and implement capacity building plans based on their needs.
  • Preparation user-friendly extension and technical literature suitable for dissemination of appropriate information to farmers/pastoralists.
  • Collect data, analyse and timely prepare necessary reports.
  Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant must hold an Honors degree in Agriculture, Agriculture Extension, Environment Science, Soil Science, Land Use Management, Natural Resources or related field from a recognized Institution.
  • Master’s degree in any of the above fields.
  • A qualification/training in a gender related field from a recognized institution is an added advantage.
  • At least seven (7) years’ experience in dissemination/ up scaling activities at watershed/ community level related to sustainable land management, natural resource management, climate smart agriculture; five (5) of which should have included engagement with rural communities and socio-economic issues of pastoral, agro-pastoralist and agricultural farming systems.
