Job Summary: The overall objective of this position is to ensure that income generation financial targets are achieved and that activities are implemented with the highest standard and quality for clients. The Business Development Manager will lead on sales and marketing in the region, finalising the operational and marketing strategy and driving sales through networking and targeted marketing. The Business Development Manager will also ensure a commercial approach to the income generation portfolio, identifying efficiencies and achieving income targets whilst retaining quality. The Business Development Manager will also oversee income generation activities in Uganda and other countries managed by Uganda and ensure these are delivered in line with agreed client & organisational targets, budget and workplan.
The Business Development Manager reports to the Country Manager and line manages the Training & Consultancy Officer, Sustainability Program Officer and Marketing & Sales Officer.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Income generation and Fundraising 90%
· Lead on delivery or delegation of training and consultancy contracts and projects in the East African region. Ensure projects delivered on time, to client specification and within budget.
· Lead on identification, negotiation and securing of training and consultancy work in East Africa and other potential regions.
· Lead on production of proposals, business plans and concept notes as required by clients from time to time.
· Lead on researching new areas of business development and prepare reports as required
· Arrange and execution of meetings with potential clients in the region
· Lead on piloting the SEC -Fee paying model in Mukono District and Entrepreneurship training and business support services. Ensure these pilots are scaled up to other areas in Uganda.
· Lead on the development of SEC fee-paying model and Entrepreneurship training resources.
· Manage, coach and empower x 1 Training & Consultancy Officer, 1 SEC Senior Field Officer – Sustainability and 1 Marketing & Sales Officer. Capacity builds a team and manages their performance.
· Review the quality of the work completed with the line reports on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the agreed standards.
· Support fundraising team by inputting to programme design, consultations, narrative and budget for funding applications as requested.
· Oversee an income-generation team by developing business, attending sales meetings and inputting to technical assistance proposals and training and consultancy plans
Operations (Finance and Compliance) 10%
· Ensure effective financial management of UGFEE, TCGL & UGET budgets in line with finance and procurement policy
· Liaise with admin team on all procurement and ensure procurement carried out in line with procurement policy
· Ensure on time, accurate financial reports and requisitions accompanied by receipts
· Member of Uganda Senior Management Team
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: The successful applicant should have the following qualifications, skills, experience, and capabilities
· The Business Development Manager should hold a Master’s Degree in a relevant field
· Proven working experience of 8 years + with at least 4 years in Business Development/Fundraising or Sales or Marketing function in a social enterprise or NGO setting.
· Track record in developing marketing strategies and delivering against sales targets in a commercial or social enterprise environment
· Excellent relationship management skills with proven ability to manage the sales process from prospecting to proposal development to contracting
· Strong communication skills, with the ability to present credibly at senior policy level
· Robust understanding of customer service and experience adapting a product or service to respond to client feedback
· Competent programme management skills with the ability to oversee multiple projects and provide guidance and support to line reports where necessary
· Proficiency in MS Office and CRM software (e.g., Salesforce)
· Highly motivated, organised and able to manage competing priorities on a tight timeline
· Line management experience of 3+ reports
· Ability to work independently as part of a small, high-performing team.
· Fluent written and spoken English.
· No criminal record (to be evidenced by a letter of good conduct from Interpol).
