Job Title:    Program Director (Mobile
Library Program)

Organisation: Pangea
Educational Development (PANGEA)

Duty Station:  Seguku,
Wakiso, Uganda

Reports to: Country
Director

About US:

Pangea Educational
Development (PANGEA) is a small nonprofit organization that believes in the
liberating power and opportunities provided by a quality education. Our model
was developed to empower communities to improve their own educational
circumstances: the school environment, livelihoods of teachers, and access for
under-resourced students and to do so in a way that is sustainable. We are a
community of changemakers, mixed with staff, volunteers, and community
champions. Each member of our community is working towards realizing our
mission by dedicating their time and skills through a wholehearted commitment
to it. As a result, we are equally dedicated to those who work with us.

The Mobile Library Program Description:

Access to texts in
schools as well as in homes is a pervasive issue in Uganda. Access to books has
traditionally been achieved through the investment of public libraries in
addition to the emerging trend of school-based libraries. One of the ironic
challenges with this approach is limited access. Books held in physical spaces
often limit their availability only to those who are able to physically access
that space, both by distance as well as by membership. Further, texts are often
kept under “lock & key” in order to protect these highly prized items at
the risk of not using them to their potential. These policies do not allow
students to check out books and take them home. Without access to books,
children will often fail to create a positive, consistent habit of reading,
impacting their long-term academic success.

PANGEA launched its
Mobile Library Program to deliver a vast collection of international and local
storybooks to homes and schools across Wakiso, Gulu, and Imvepi Refugee
Settlement. Each month, families and schools receive books for their children
and students to read in exchange for a small Netflix-like subscription fee.
This model lowers the cost to access and increases the variety of books that
children are exposed to, helping create a culture of reading in the home and
classroom. In turn, these small contributions sustain the program in
perpetuity.
