About US:

DefendDefenders is
the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project. We seek to
strengthen the work of human rights defenders (HRDs) throughout the region by
reducing their vulnerability to the risk of persecution and by enhancing their
capacity to effectively defend human rights. DefendDefenders works inBurundi,
Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia (together with Somaliland),
South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

 

Job Summary:  The
Communications Officer will be in charge of managing our public profile, online
and offline.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       
Producing
regular media and communications output (press releases, newsletters, HRD
profiles, etc.);

·       
Maintaining
and strategically using our website and social media;

·       
Planning
and executing online and offline campaigns;

·       
Producing
audio-visual content;

·       
Editing
and designing print and digital materials and publications;

·       
Networking
with strategic media actors and partner organisations;

·       
Assist
with advocacy; and

·       
Train
HRDs in strategic and effective communication.

 


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The
applicant should have a background in communications or journalism; and

·       
Excellent
written and editing skills;

·       
Experience
with Adobe Cloud, WordPress/Elementor, audio-visual recording equipment, and
social media monitoring and campaigning;

·       
Exceptional
interpersonal skills;

·       
Willing
to travel;

·       
Passion
for human rights.

·       
Fluency
in Arabic, French or Portuguese an advantage.

·       
The
successful candidate should work independently and effectively to meet
deadlines with minimal supervision, is self-motivated, highly organised, and a
team player that can provide guidance.
