About US:

The Medical Research
Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with
dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines
and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary
approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research,
social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation
studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the
evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the
development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following
the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of
Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council
(MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new
partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health
issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI
Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala
Districts.

 

Job Summary:  The Senior Laboratory Technologist is
responsible for conducting immunology and molecular biology research, and
analyzing research results using bio-informatics tools.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       
Participate
in planning experiments and projects, and in proposal writing, particularly in
laboratory and related bio-informatics components;

·       
Plan and
prepare a personal fellowship proposal for submission within one year;

·       
Find and
read literature relevant to the work; participate in sharing knowledge through
laboratory meetings and journal clubs;

·       
Prepare
documents for ethical approval, including material transfer agreements;

·       
Develop
new assays, or adapt and implement assays that are new to the laboratory;

·       
Prepare
and review standard operating procedures;

·       
Conduct
bio-informatics analyses of laboratory related and epidemiological work, with
the support of supervisors;

·       
Liaise with
international collaborators regarding assay development, and analysis of big
laboratory data;

·       
Participate
in writing publications, including as lead author, and present work at national
and international meetings;

·       
Assist
in capacity building by demonstrating practical procedures to new staff and to
students on attachments;

·       
Engage
in proactive problem prevention of GCLP practice;

·       
Deputise
for the post-doctoral/senior scientist and laboratory manager in his/her
absence; and,

·       
Help
with other laboratory procedures and projects as and when required by the line
manager.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The
ideal candidate must hold an MSc in Bio-informatics- or data science-related
subject;

·       
BSc in
Laboratory Sciences;

·       
At least
6 months’ experience working on a Bio-informatics related project;

·       
At least
4 years’ experience conducting laboratory research in a recognized institution;

·       
Experience
of developing, trouble-shooting and implementing immunological and molecular
assays, and their quality control;

·       
Should
have Good Clinical Practice and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice
certification;

·       
Ability
to learn and conduct assays and analyses required, according to study
protocols;

·       
Computer
skills with proficiency in Word, Excel, Access & Power point;

·       
Great
communication skills; and,

·       
Good
interpersonal skills.
