Conservation Society (ARCOS Network) is a regional non-profit organization,
harnessing its experience in over 25 years operating in environmental
conservation and sustainable development work in the Albertine Rift region,
Africa Great Lakes and African Mountains. ARCOS’s mission is “To enhance
biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of natural resources
through the promotion of collaborative conservation action for nature and
people”. ARCOS is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee in the
UK and has offices in Kampala, Uganda and in Kigali, Rwanda.

 

ARCOS’s work is
built around 3 pillars: 1) we facilitate networking with local, national and
international players to enhance sustainable development through information
and experience sharing; 2) we empower stakeholders through capacity building,
policy dialogue and engagement when implementing our work; and 3) We Act on the
ground through an integrated landscape approach focusing mainly on protecting
biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem services, promoting sustainable
livelihoods and resilience to climate change though Nature Based Community
Groups. One of the key programmes of ARCOS is to work with different
stakeholders in promoting sustainable mountain development agenda in Africa and
integrated freshwater management in the Great Lakes region. It is in this
framework that ARCOS is looking for a resourceful, experienced and dynamic
candidate to be based at its Kampala office to work closely with various
government and non-government partners in regional policy engagement and
advocacy on sustainable mountain development, Great Lakes freshwater management
and building resilience to climate change.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  Within delegated authority, the Regional
Policy Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

·       
Strategic
support to ARCOS’s Programmes on policy delivery and development,

·       
Integrate
mountain climate change adaptation into planning and policy processes,

·       
Compile,
analyse and synthesise information, lessons and best practices related to
sustainable mountain development, climate change and integrated freshwater
management to guide informed decision making,

·       
Monitor
and disseminate developments on mountain climate change impacts and adaptation
strategies in Africa and the Great Lakes ecosystems,

·       
Formulate
and communicate key messages through campaigns and regional dialogues,

·       
Prepare
policy briefs, press releases and articles on mountain climate change and
policy issues,

·       
Collaborate
with partners to pursue joint policy objectives and partnerships,

·       
Develop
working relationships with key influential bodies in the region working on
mountain climate change and freshwater ecosystems for joint policy and advocacy
agenda,

·       
Identify
opportunities for funding from government agencies and private sector, and

·       
Identify
and develop projects related to mountain climate change, policy and advocacy
for the biodiversity conservation, community livelihoods and environmental
governance.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The
ideal candidate must hold a Master’s degree in Environment and Natural Resource
Management, Development and Policy

·       
Good
understanding of sustainable mountain development,

·       
Broad
awareness of conservation issues, threats and environmental policies in the
region

·       
Experience
in policy formulation and advocacy mountain climate change planning,

·       
Detailed
research, analysis and ability to write technical information,

·       
Confident
communicator with potential for campaigning, lobbying and fundraising,

·       
Committed
to NGO development and management of time and other allocated resources,

·       
Ability
to work long hours, travel or relocate for the benefit of the project and
organisation,

·       
Passionate,
proactive, enthusiastic and results-oriented personality, and

·       
Organisational
skills and flexibility to work under pressure with multi-task team.
