About US:

Rwenzori Center for
Research and Advocacy is beginning a new initiative called “1,000 
Gardens for Health
and Nutrition” to improve the health, nutritional status and livelihoods of
families in Kasese District, Uganda. The implementation theme will be “a
sustainably grown vegetable garden as the entry point to improving the
household’s well-being”.

 

Job Summary:  The Agriculture/Horticulture Officer will be
responsible for developing and implementing the 1,000 Gardens for Health and Nutrition
initiative under the supervision and with the inputs of RCRA Executive
Director, Senior Technical Advisor, and local RCRA staff. Using a phased and
integrated approach, the Officer will ensure that all participating women
gardeners ‘graduate’ with knowledge and means to sustain successful vegetable
gardens to improve household welfare through collective and individual
supports.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       
Training
1,000 households, using a phased approach, in agroecological/sustainable methods
in horticulture, including soil fertility, integrated pest management, and
water conservation.

·       
Ensure
supervision and maintenance of health of vegetable gardens & linkages
system, as a core part in Case Management processes, thereby ensure proper
documentation of beneficiaries reached to access cores services.

·       
Preparing
and submitting timely and informative project periodic activity reports.

·       
Document
best practices at community level and within the referral and linkage network
in form of case studies, success stories and share at various forums at
district level, project and national level.

·       
Organizing
agricultural demonstrations and awards to best performing gardens on a
quarterly basis, or as deemed appropriate intervals.

·       
Undertake
from time to time any other tasks/responsibilities relating to project
implementation and achievement of results.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The
applicant must hold a university diploma or higher in agriculture, with a
specialty in horticulture preferred.

·       
Good
technical knowledge of agroecological methods related to non-chemical pest
management and soil fertility.

·       
Prior
experience providing technical assistance for small-scale
horticulture/vegetable gardens in field placements, internships or other means.

·       
She/he
should have demonstrated ability and experience to work at community/village
level.

·       
Able to
develop periodic work plans and timely reports

·       
Technical
competence, planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation skills

·       
She/he
should have demonstrated skills to work in project teams.

·       
She/he
should have computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, data entry
etc….

·       
Demonstrable
good communication skills in both English and Lukonzo

·       
Skills
and experience in coordination and network building.

 

Desirable:

·       
Driving
permit (class A- Motorcycles)

·       
Additional
training in M& E shall be an added advantage.

·       
Knowledge
of human nutrition and ability to design nutrition-oriented gardens.
