Uganda Clays is leading manufacturer of quality baked clay
building products in Uganda. It uses state of the art kilns to currently
provide the building materials in a brick-red color. The company’s products are
categorized into roofing tiles, bricks, maxpans, quarry floor tiles and others.

Job Summary:  The
Head of Production is responsible for overseeing and coordinating both the Kajjansi
and Kamonkoli production operations making sure that they run smoothly and
efficiently while developing strategies to increase production at minimal
costs. He also works closely with the Kajjansi factory manager and the General
Manager, Operations at the Kamonkoli branch to increase productivity and
profitability within the production department based on safety, environmental
and quality standards and company policies at all times.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

 Strategic & operational planning for the
production department Developing and ensuring implementation of strategic and
operational plans that will result in sustainable success and profitability for
Uganda Clays: Including, but not limited to:

·       Keeping up to date on best practise in modern
technology and ceramics production processes and effective factory management

·       Receiving and
analysing production and quality assurance data in order to monitor the
production capability of the factory and
make recommendations for improvement and innovation

·       Contributing
personal expertise and insight into the organisation-wide strategic planning
process; leading the development of
strategic and operational plans for the factory

·       Overseeing the
implementation of str
ategic and
operational plans; in particular, ensuring that any innovation or improvement
projects are managed effectively Co-ordinating production

To participate in
and lead planning activities which will ensure that correct types and
quantities of product are provided by the factory to meet marketing department
requirements:

Including, but not
limited to:

·       Attending
regular meetings betw
een
marketing department and production department in order to determine production
targets and to receive customer feedback

·       Reviewing the
order files and liaising with the factory managers to draw up the production
schedule for the week; reviewing the
maintenance schedules in order to ensure that the two are co-ordinated
Reviewing quality feedback in order to determine whether there are issues that
need to be addressed within the factory

·       Ensuring efficiency & cost effectiveness
of production

To ensure the
continuous smooth operation and efficiency of the factory production lines:

Including, but not
limited to:

·       Ensuring that
effective communication channels are in place and being used by staff to
report any problems that occur in the
production lines

·       Analysing
production and quality assurance data in order to identify inefficiencies or
poor
functioning of the
production line

·       Carrying out
spot checks and personal observations in order to identify opportunities for
improving efficiency of the production lines
and quality of product

·       Overseeing
repairs and improvements, and taking other action, that will ensure continuous
efficient operation of the line; ensuring
that problems are permanently resolved in a professional manner

·       Taking the lead to ensure that spares management is
efficiently managed and that all necessary spares are available at the point of
a need is identified and thus contributing to the reduced down time of machines
and minimising financial loss to the business

·       Ensuring that
Mechanical maintenance is planned and scheduled in such a way as to
minimise disruption to production;
supporting the team as required (e.g. by acquiring resources or liaising with
production staff) to ensure effective ongoing maintenance of the production
lines

·       Ensuring that
the line is being operated efficiently by an appropriate number of
appropriately qualified staff; liaising with
HR to take appropriate corrective action if not

Quality & safety

To take personal
responsibility for ensuring that Uganda Clay’s Quality and Safety procedures are
implemented in the factory at all times:. Including, but not limited to:

·       Ensuring that
appropriate quality and safety procedures are develo
ped and clearly communicated to staff
(including training)

·       Liaising with
the Health, Safety & Environment Officer to carry out risk assessments and
identify appropriate risk reduction
strategies

·       Ensuring that
staff comply with risk reduction strategies
(including the wearing of safety equipment) and follow procedures;
taking firm corrective action if necessary

·       Engaging with
the Quality & Safety Management System in order to report problems,
participate in problem solving teams, and
close corrective actions as required

·       Overseeing the
physical environment in the factory to ensure that Health, Safety and

·       Environmental standards are adhered to and
that the area is generally tidy and clean

Managing staff

To lead the
production team, in a manner that empowers them to efficiently produce correct standard
and quantity of products and deliver excellent customer service:. Including,
but not limited to:

·       Communicating to
the production Team a clear and exciting vision for Uganda Clays and for
  the
contribution of the team towards the wider goals of the organisation

·       Ensuring that
each member of the team fully understands the tasks that are expected of
them and that they are aware of best
practise in factory ; ensuring that they behave in a way which will maintain
good relationships with customers and other UCL staff

·       Ensuring that
work is planned and organised in a way which will meet production and
quality targets in the most cost effective
manner possible; ensuring that team members are given appropriate workloads and
are working efficiently

·       Supporting team
members to enable them to give of their best e.g. by encouraging and
praising good performance, coaching,
assisting staff to prevent or resolve problems, providing resources, tools and
equipment

·       Monitoring and
reviewing performance and, in particular, carrying out appraisals, holding
staff accountable for meeting standards and
delivering any improvement goals which have been identified; taking decisive
action in the case of poor performance

·       Ensuring that
staff are adequately trained and developed for their roles e.g. by analyzing
staff training needs, liaising with HR to
organise the delivery of training or coaching, coordinating the sharing of
experience Managing finances for the department

To ensure effective
utilisation of the finances associated with production: Including, but not limited
to:

·       Developing and
overseeing the budget for production; ensuring that plans and re
sources are matched and priorities for
expenditure identified

·       Receiving
financial reports from the Finance Department, reviewing expenditure against
budget and taking any necessary corrective
actions; ensuring cost-effective utilisation of resources at all times

·       Ensuring that
all financial transactions managed by the department are carried out in
accordance with Uganda Clay’s policies and
procedures

·       Safeguarding
Uganda Clay’s financial resources by giving due consideration before signing
approvals; whilst ensuring customer
satisfaction with a quick turnaround time Liaising with the Procurement
department in order to identify suitable suppliers for major equipment
purchases, reviewing quotations and approving significant expenditures

·       Following up on any issues raised during audits

·       Authorising
staff overtime, ensuring that they don’t exceed the set monthly limits

·       To carry out other duties as requested by the
Managing Director

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       The ideal
applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in; Process Engineering, Chemical
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.

·       Postgraduate
studies in any of the above fields is an added advantage.

·       At least 10
years’ work experience, 5 of
which
must have been at the managerial level in the production/operations function.

·       Good knowledge
in ceramics is an added advantage.

·       Excellent
leadership and managerial skills.

·       Excellent
communication skills

·       Exemplary
organisational skills

·       Strong negotiation skills

·       ICT literacy
