About US:

Makerere University
College of Health Sciences, School of Public Health (MakSPH) with support from
the World Bank Group is coordinating the Operations Research Program on
Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) in Uganda
for a period of one (1) year. RMNCAH seeks to recruit Research Assistants (RAs)
and Research Officers (ROs) to support data collection for the different
Operations research studies.

Job Summary: The
Research Assistants will be responsible for scheduling and facilitating data
collection through Focus Group Discussions; and transcribing complete verbatim
records for all FGDs facilitated. The RAs shall also conduct and transcribe Key
Informant Interviews and In-Depth Interviews, as assigned by the Field
Supervisor.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       Identifying respondents: Work with the
respective district stakeholders to identify the appropriate respondents for
inclusion in the FGDs, KIIs and IDIs.

·       Find the necessary contact details for
identified respondents, to use in reaching them to schedule the planned data
collection events.

·       Scheduling data collection activities

·       Contact the respective respondents to
schedule the relevant data collection events.

·       Identify and secure the appropriate venue for
hosting FGDs, and communicate the address clearly to all invited FGD
participants

·       Organize the venue for FGDs – ensure adequate
and appropriate provision for seating of all participants and facilitators

·       Be present at the FGD venue in time to
welcome all participants, and to ensure departure of all participants

·       Collecting data: Facilitate the assigned data
collection process to ensure participation and in-depth discussion by all the
respondents present

·       Keep a verbatim written record of the data
collection proceedings

·       Capture a complete and clearly audible audio
recording of the entire data collection proceedings

·       Transcribing data: Transcribe all collected
data in MS-Word in line with the templates provided

·       Review and refine transcribed data to ensure
full alignment with the audio record of respective data sets

·       Ensuring data safety: Keep all data collected
safe from any form of damage, and from access by any unauthorized persons

·       Submit all collected and transcribed data
copies, including hand-written field notes; audio recordings and transcribed
soft and hard copies; to the Field Supervisor

·       Perform any other duties as may be assigned
by the Field Supervisor from time to time.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       The applicant should hold formal education to
a minimum of Advanced Level or its equivalent

·       Experience in collection and transcription of
qualitative research data – with evidence of products from past such exercises

·       Written recommendation from at least two
Researchers or Research Supervisors that attest to your experience in
collection and transcription of qualitative data Skills

·       Excellent interpersonal and communication
skills, written and verbal

·       Ability to produce concise, informative and
appropriately written documentation

·       Ability to capture detailed and clear field
notes for data collection events

·       Ability to capture audio recordings and to
transcribe them out as written/typed notes

·       Fluent in the respective local language of
study respondents

·       Effective functioning in a team context
