About US:

Makerere University
College of Health Sciences, School of Public Health (MakSPH) with support from
the World Bank Group is coordinating the Operations Research Program on
Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) in Uganda
for a period of one (1) year. RMNCAH seeks to recruit Research Assistants (RAs)
and Research Officers (ROs) to support data collection for the different
Operations research studies.

Job Summary: The
research assistants are primarily responsible for collecting field data and
transcribing their interviews. They will have direct contact with respondents
and have a great bearing on the quality of data collected and ultimately on the
quality of data output. They will also collaborate with other research teams
for successful completion of data collection.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       Field work preparation duties: Attend a
two-week training workshop for research assistants

·       Receive data collection tools
(questionnaires) and equipment.

·       Conduct piloting of the data collection
tools.

·       Establish contact with study districts,
facilities and key informants

·       Field work and data collection

·       Schedule time(s) with participants to
complete the assessment tools

·       Respond to questions the participants may
have about the assessment

·       Perform day-to-day data collection
activities: travels to districts, health facilities and key personnel offices
to collect data

·       Review and edit data to ensure completeness
and accuracy of information

·       Receive data queries from the Data Manager
and resolve them or clarify data collected if needed

·       Report/send summary data collected to the
Principal Investigator at the end of each day

·       Comply with the requirements necessary for
conducting a successful participant interviews.

·       Abstract data from databases and health
facility records

·       Conduct Key Informant Interviews and Focus
Group Discussions

·       After field visits, ensure that all
questionnaires are complete, and all data captured is kept secure at all times

·       Ensure that all equipment is accounted for

·       Attend daily meetings with the Principal
Investigators after field work to discuss any challenges, solutions and
experiences

·       Transcribe the interviews that they have
collected

·       Financial Accountability: Keep all
participant signature forms and a detailed account of spending while in field

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree
in Social Sciences, Statistics, Economics or equivalent

·       A certificate or training in qualitative
and/or quantitative research is an added advantage

·       Previous experience with data collection and
qualitative transcribing will be an added advantage

·       At least two years of relevant working
experience as a research assistant or related position

·       Previous experience with abstracting health
facility and database records is an added advantage

·       Excellent interpersonal and communication
skills, written and verbal

·       Computer literate

·       Ability to produce concise, informative and
appropriate written documentation

·       Ability to work independently as well as an
effective team player

·       Experience working in rural settings for
extended periods of time

·       Ability to speak native languages in the area
(Luganda, Rukiga, Japhadola, Ateso (from Tororo), Lango, English).

·       Ability to abstract data from records and
information databases
