About US:

Peer To Peer Uganda (PEERU) is a registered non-profit
organization that works towards social transformation and sustainable
development with special emphasis placed on vulnerable and inadequately served
groups of adolescents and youths (10 – 30 years) in Uganda. With foot prints in
over 16 districts, PEERU has demonstrated that young people are significant
actors in development and can drive positive change at grass root, national,
regional and global levels.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  The
Policy and Advocacy officer is expected to perform the following functions;

                 
Develop, plan and implement PEERU’s policy and
advocacy projects and campaigns.

                 
Strategy monitoring and analyzing of policy
developments, information sharing, advocacy and networking.

                 
Design and conduct research and policy analysis
on relevant development advocacy issues (both quantitative and qualitative).

                 
Actively participate and represent the
organization in various networks and coalitions to share PEERU’s position on
various issues after in-house consultation.

                 
Produce reports, briefings, articles, updates
and summaries based on research on current development advocacy processes,
policies and practices.

                 
Keep up to date with ongoing national policies,
framework, guidelines of line-ministries influencing and shaping PEERUs work here
and beyond.

                 
Keep up to date with national and global
policies, frameworks and developments to shape PEERUs work at grass root,
national, regional and global level.

                 
Actively inform, share and disseminate PEERU’s
content, position, across various mediums (website, newsletter and other
publications) to relevant networks and individuals.

                 
Play an active role in ensuring effective
communications strategy and outreach including designing dissemination
strategies and keeping the website up to date.

                 
Organize, and lead advocacy meetings, including
with politicians, officials and parliamentarians.

                 
Present PEERU’s work in various foras (meetings,
conferences, seminars, etc).

                 
Organize, facilitate and attend meetings,
conferences, teleconferences and other processes, including with PEERU’s
coalition members and allies, including agreeing on common strategies and
initiatives

                 
Policy reviews and analysis, reports and
briefings with recommendations for changes in the policy and practice of
Uganda’s institutions and government: – re-actively in response to requests
from others for PEERU’s perspectives; – proactively, initiating research and
advocacy projects that draw on PEERUs’ experience of serving the youth.

                 
Advise policy makers, elected officials,
cultural and religious leaders on relevant aspects of public policy.

                 
Collaborating with other staff at PEERU, develop
ways of improving PEERUs’ involvement of adolescents, young people and youth
experience in shaping the advocacy agenda at community, national and global
level.

                 
Establish and develop relationships with
relevant high profile influencers, including but not limited to Ministers, MPs,
Peers, CSOs, think tanks etc.

                 
Reporting and capacity building of staff on
regular updates on advocacy and running campaigns and developments to the
organization.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

                 
The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in
Development Studies, Public Relations, Communications or health or social
science among other related courses

                 
Additional related field trainings and
achievements are an advantage!

                 
Two years’ experience in planning and execution
of policy and advocacy work in the NGO world.

                 
Demonstrable understanding of issues of national
and global health policies, frameworks, human-rights and more.

                 
Collaboration and networking in shaping the
advocacy agenda at community, national and global level.

                 
Demonstrable and evidence-based writing skills.

                 
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally
and in writing

                 
Exceptional interpersonal and negotiation skills

                 
Analytical, decision making and presentation
skills

                 
Analytical and research skills of political and
policy developments and positions that imply transformative change.

                 
Strong planning and organizational skills,
particularly the ability to plan and execute research that contributes to
advocacy strategies, and ability to prioritize, use own initiative and work
independently.

                 
Computer and IT skills in Ms applications,
e-communication, applications and technologies.

                 
Time management and ability to prioritize
multiple tasks

                 
Willing to work additional hours at crucial
times

                 
Able to work effectively in a diverse team
environment

                 
Able to promote PEERU’s mission, values, and
objectives
