Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a
non-profit biomedical research Organization, whose mission is to mitigate
disease threats through quality research, health care and disease surveillance.
MUWRP was established in 2002 by a Memorandum of Agreement between The Henry M.
Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, lnc. (HJF) and
Makerere University (Mak) to undertake medical research to test HIV vaccines.
Over the years, MUWRP’s portfolio has progressively expanded to include vaccine
research for Ebola and Marburg viruses, surveillance of influenza and
influenza- like viruses and other emerging infections in humans and animals;
also epidemiological, basic and implementation research in HIV treatment, care
and prevention programs in the Districts of Kayunga, Mukono, Buvuma and Buikwe.

Job Summary:   The Research Nurse will work with the rest of
the team to identify and recruit study participants according to the approved
protocol and GCP. This position will be based in Fort Portal but with expected
travels to other location as may be required. The incumbent will work under
MUWRP guidelines and policies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Recruitment of study volunteers

·       
Taking Medical History and vitals of study participants

·       
Administering HIV testing and counseling

·       
Administering Informed Consent

·       
Compliance with study procedures and GCP
standards

·       
Ensure participant safety and confidentiality.

·       
Following Standard Operating Procedures.

·       
Facilitate timely enrollment to MUWRP ongoing
and planned studies

·       
Participate in actively following up study
participants to minimize loss to follow up and missed visits

·       
Conduct Heath Education sessions

·       
Knowledgeable of applicable Standard Operating
Procedures.

·       
Complete, timely and accurate documentation of
all activities as per SOPs, MOPs and study protocols

·       
Expected to be part of the clinical teams that
will be taking part in the active clinical management or care for patients and
or study participants at host health facilities including taking part in the
active treatment of severe sepsis, EVD, and similar patients in the research
unit or ETU during an active EVD outbreak.

·       
Keeping of the occupational health records for
daily temperature measurements for staff and flag all febrile healthcare
workers for follow up.

·       
Participate in patient/healthcare worker safety
activities including environmental hygiene

·       
Updates patients’ charts/symptom logs, white
board and discharge lists.

·       
Teaching and mentorship of all supporting all
staff, ensuring good clinical practice is maintained.

·       
Understand IPC principles

·       
Joining external calls where required to help
support the clinical team

·       
Willingness to participate in on-call, out of
hours, and weekend work as required.

·       
Participate in VHF patient triage/screening and
admission of suspect cases to the designated isolation area.

·       
Any other duties as directed by the immediate
supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The applicant must hold a Bachelor of Science in
Nursing or Diploma in Nursing/ Midwifery

·       
Experience or knowledgeable in the IPC
principles and or willingness to participate in regular IPC training drills

·       
Two years of clinical research experience

·       
Highly organized, detail-oriented and
self-motivated.

·       
Ability to work on own initiative.

·       
Ability to multi task

·       
Be Flexible

·       
Strict observance of agreed upon
timelines/deadlines

·       
Good interpersonal/communication skills

·       
Fluency in verbal and written English.

·       
Respects authority and commands respect

·       
Registration with nursing and midwifery council

·       
Recent clinical experience working as a clinical
care essential

·       
Recent experience in pediatrics and O&G
would be desirable.

·       
Able to carry out clinical care, assessing
patients clinically and carrying out usual clinical procedures to the level of
a high dependency unit

·       
To be able to carry out usual inpatient care
while wearing full PPE.

·       
The ability to live in Fort Portal and travel
unexpectedly to research sites.
