The
Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant
research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and
immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multi-disciplinary
approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research,
social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation
studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the
evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the
development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following
the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of
Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC
UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new
partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health
issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI
Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala
Districts.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· Attending the mortuary
to receive samples.
· Processing and storing
study participant samples following standard operating procedures.
· Performing immunological
and molecular assays on fresh and stored samples. These include mycobacterial
growth inhibition assays, flow cytometry, whole blood assays, Enzyme Linked
Immunosorbent Assays and PCR.
· Entry of laboratory
specimen data in computer based programmes.
· Adhering to and
implementing Good Clinical Laboratory Practices in the lab. These include
regular cleaning and disinfecting equipment, tracking equipment servicing
requirements, monitoring temperatures and liquid nitrogen levels, backing up
data, running equipment performance quality controls.
· Tracking procurement and
delivery of laboratory supplies.
· Ensuring there are
adequate reagents and study materials in the laboratory. They will also ensure
there are adequate sample collection materials at the hospital sites of the
study.
· Development and review
of standard operating procedures.
· Ensuring all lab
activities are carried out with health and safety requirements in mind.
· Participate in
laboratory meetings and journal clubs, and in the organisation of these
activities.
· Data analysis and
presentation of data in lab meetings, national and international conferences or
meetings.
· Training new staff,
students, interns and visiting scientists in laboratory safety and assay
procedures.
· Deputise and assist the laboratory manager in
any duties assigned.
· Perform any other
general I-Vac activities as may be assigned by the Line Manager
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The ideal applicant must
hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from a recognized
University.
· Possession of a master’s
degree in Immunology or a related discipline is an added advantage.
· Should possess
experience in a laboratory section preferably in a research setting.
· Should have knowledge of
post-mortem procedures, tissue collection and cell isolation techniques from
human tissues.
· Should also possesses
knowledge of immunological laboratory techniques such as PBMC isolation and
cryopreservation, flow cytometry, whole blood assays, Enzyme Linked
Immunosorbent Assays and molecular assays such as PCR.
· Should have knowledge of
advanced immunofluorescence staining techniques.
· Should have an Allied
Health Sciences Certificate.
· Should have GCP and, or
GCLP Certification.
· Training in a BSL3
laboratory.
· Willingness to work out
of office hours when need arises.
