irrigation and other technologies to smallholders. Agriworks develops, produces,
and sells an innovative product line of small scale irrigation technologies and
services to commercial smallholder farmers, as well as products such as grain
storage bags.

Job Summary:  The Gender Officer will run one of two
premises involved in our ongoing project titled H202Go. This project will run a
pilot service that uses motorcycle riders to provide irrigation services to
farmers, organized into groups for training and organizing irrigation days. The
role of this position is to increase participation of women in the project, as
clients who use and benefit from the irrigation service. This includes
identifying women in project areas who would like to participate, understand
their constraints to irrigating their plots, and identifying ways that women
can benefit from family plots which they work on in the program.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Operations planning

  • Work with directors and other staff to develop monthly and quarterly
    operations targets
  • Communicate operational targets to staff and develop weekly
    operations plans with staff members and other stakeholders

Identifying potential
women participants

  • Meet women in areas with registered groups and make lists of
    potential participants
  • Hold initial discussions with women to get their views as to who to
    include and how to increase participation

Holding meetings
with both women and men in the area to develop local strategies for women to participate
in the irrigation service

  • Identify reasons for lower women’s participation in the irrigation
    service
  • Formulate strategies with participants for how to increase women’s
    participation as plot managers and their benefits of engaging in family plots
  • Engage with men in the area who would be stakeholders in encouraging
    women’s participation  

Develop targets and
track levels of women’s participation in each service area

  • Work with other directors to develop evaluation strategy for women’s
    engagement
  • Create targets for each area with registered groups for women to
    participate as plot managers, or beneficiaries from irrigation plots
  • Track these targets and update regularly

Provide support to
women who participate in the irrigation service

  • Hold ongoing meetings and personal visits to women who aim to
    participate in the service
  • Offer additional advice and technical support related to using the
    irrigation service to individuals

Support other project
staff in H2Go activities

  • Support other project staff on onboarding participants, especially
    among women
  • Support other project staff on farmer trainings for irrigation
    service

Book-keeping, cash
handling, and reporting

  • Keep paper and digital records of all field activities (attendances,
    field notes, etc)
  • Ensure all weekly reports and files are submitted on time
  • Ensure all finances received are deposited promptly into company
    account
  • Ensure all expenses are recorded daily and updated to company

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Degree or Diploma in agriculture or
    business related field
  • At least two years of field experience working to help women become
    more empowered in farming, especially horticulture and irrigation
  • Two years experience in vegetable production or extension and / or
    small business administration
  • Communication: The
    successful applicant will communicate effectively both within and outside
    the company. This includes good judgment about when and how to communicate
    relevant information. The candidate will have strong skills in accurate,
    concise, and comprehensive communication in verbal, written, and digital
    formats.
  • Expertise in Business Operations: This includes knowledge of bookkeeping principles, inventory
    management, business documentation, and customer support.
  • Ability to Learn Quickly: There will be a number of skills which must be learned on the job.
    We expect the applicant to be able to focus on training and self-learning
    to rapidly gain expertise in various skills required to complete the roles
    of the position
  • Competency with computer and smartphone applications
  • Ability to ride motorcycle with valid permit an advantage
  • Planning and management skill
  • Experience in horticulture production and training farmers
  • Language skills: Required: English Fluency Lugisu or Luganda
    Proficiency Desired: Kiswahili Proficiency
