The Agency for Cooperation in Research and Development –
Uganda (ACORD-U) is a Ugandan National Non-Governmental Organisation that has
worked in Uganda since 1979 as a local Branch of ACORD International.
Currently, ACORD-U Implements interventions in more than 23 Districts in the
South-western, Western, Northern, West-Nile, and Eastern Parts of Uganda.
ACORD-U’s Development and Humanitarian interventions are focused on thematic
areas of; WASH, Livelihoods, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Conflict
transformation, Gender Based Violence, Water Resources Management and Climate
Change. ACORD’s country Country Office in Kampala and field offices in the
districts of Adjumani, Gulu, Yumbe, Mbarara, Tororo, and Kyangwali.

Job Summary:   The Assistant Project Officer – Environmental
Management will support project delivery through provision of technical and
professional planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting services.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

·        
Participate in the identification of 3 target
micro-catchments using the available selection criteria.

·        
Support the process of participatory community
catchment management planning

·        
Assist the supervision of catchment protection
and restoration structures to ensure that they are constructed in line with
specifications, acceptable Standards (BS or Euro Code) and guidelines in the
Project  Implementation Manual.

·        
Support the day to day mobilisation of the
community and other stakeholders to participate in project trainings, and
sensitizations meetings.

·        
Closely liaise with key entities such as NEMA,
VWMZ, community structures and LGs to co-implement activities in which their
inputs are required by the project.

·        
Closely work with the target communities to
identify micro-catchment hotspots in which project interventions are required.

·        
Participate in facilitation of the process for
preparation and execution of Micro-Catchment Restoration and Management Action
Plans for the 4 target landscapes.

·        
Guide 40 target beneficiary groups to receive
and make good use of the conservation fund. Assess their IGAs and advise on
sustainability.

·        
Support communities to set-up soil and water
conservation structures for the protection of the 4 target micro-catchments.

·        
Assist the implementation of key interventions
such as wetland surveillance, facilitation of watchdog training, IEC materials
development and development of advocacy briefs

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

·        
The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in
Environmental Management or Related Discipline from a recognised institution of
higher learning.

·        
Five years of experience doing similar work

·        
Proven Knowledge and experience in
Watershed/Catchment Management Processes is a must.

·        
Knowledge of participatory community planning
and implementation processes is essential

·        
Deeper understanding of Wetland management and
Integrated Water Resources (hydrology) Management with interest in the use of a
landscape approach including sound understanding of linkages between
ecosystems, WASH and Land use.

·        
Excellent communicator with very good written and
spoken English language skills.

·        
Ability to plan and facilitate complex
participatory community actions including particpatory planning and execution
of plans.

·        
Experience in preparing funding proposals

·        
Existing relevant (water resources, wetland,
environment) network in Uganda with sound understanding of Ugandan water
resources and wetland policies

·        
Familiarity with Hydrological Modelling, RAMSAR
Information System, GIS, satellite imaging

·        
Ability to communicate in the local language is
an added advantage

·        
Ability to ride a motorcycle

·        
Experience working with local communities
