About US:

PEAS (Promoting
Equality in African Schools) is a UK based charity/social enterprise with a
mission to ‘expand access to sustainably delivered, quality secondary education
across Africa’. PEAS establishes and operates low-cost secondary schools in
Uganda and Zambia in areas where access to quality secondary education is
limited due to cost and geographical barriers. PEAS’ interventions are built
upon 3 pillars of education impact; Access, Quality and Sustainability. Since
opening its first schools in 2008, the PEAS network has grown to 31 schools,
and we are currently educating over 16,000 students. PEAS Uganda has about 50
staff at the Country Office and over 900 staff working in the network schools.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Grant reporting

  • Promote quality contract management and accurate donor reporting,
    including leading on producing financial and narrative report.
  • Communicating clear grant reporting roadmap to ensure colleagues are
    aware of their reporting responsibilities, and championing strong report
    writing skills within the organisation.

Grant management

  • Lead on strengthening internal programme and operations staff
    understanding of their responsibilities under donor running contracts and
    how this aligns with their work plans
  • Lead on coordination and stewardship over in-country donor visits,
    including the briefing of schools and colleagues in advance, talking about
    PEAS’ work with donors and timely logistics during the visit.
  • Have ownership over grant management information systems and tools
    and mentor country staff to understand reporting, budget management and
    grant commitments.

New business
development

  • Lead on identifying funding opportunities in country (institutional
    and corporate donors) and responsible for outreach and relationship
    building.
  • Work with business development colleagues on the design, writing and
    reviewing of quality funding proposals and concept papers for submission
    to funders.

Global business
development support

  • Work closely with M&E and the Technical Team to design and
    package impact data to support quality response to funders.
  • Supporting Technical Team colleagues in packaging up and describing
    their planned activities in an engaging manner.

Key Results:

  • Grant reports submitted on time, with internal agreed deadlines met
    (or any unavoidable delays shared to relationship owner well in advance)
  • High quality of narrative and financial reporting delivered, with
    senior report reviewers and narrative contributors rating the review
    process as at least 3.5 out 5 on “Good use of their time”
  • Key contributors to grants are aware of their responsibilities, the
    deliverables of the grant and provide their input to reports by pre-agreed
    deadlines
  • Securing the annual new business income target for in-country
    funding to PEAS
  • All Country Office staff of Specialist grade and above can
    articulate how their workplan corresponds to committed grant deliverables
    and are regularly informed of what activities and spending is due each
    quarter

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the PEAS UK Grants and Business Development
    Coordinator job must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in relevant
    field (Finance / Business Development or Social Sciences)
  • Expertise in working with donors such as (e.g. EU, DFID, USAID) on
    funding proposals and grant management
  • At least five years of experience in successfully raising and
    managing grants in an NGO setting
  • High level of numeracy and understanding of financial controls and
    procedures
  • Project management skills
  • Understanding of international development issues and donor trends
  • Excellent writing skills in English
  • Confidence in building relationships internally with senior
    colleagues and external agencies and donors
  • Strong project management skills, taking pride in a well organised
    project delivered on time
  • Able to quickly build rapport with individuals, and understand how
    to influence individuals to support PEAS’ mission
  • Working effectively with others to develop their knowledge of grants
    and motivate them to provide their input in a timely, quality manner
  • Highly professional and organised communicator, well placed to
    represent PEAS with demanding external stakeholders
  • Understanding of the cultural expectations of UK and US
    stakeholders, and how to communicate sensitive issues effectively with an
    international audience
  • Independent worker, able to work with minimal supervision and
    escalate issues quickly, where required.
  • Adaptable and comfortable learning new technologies, able to
    continue to improve PEAS’ grant management systems
  • Quick to respond to evolving situations and work flexibly with
    others

Desired

  • Knowledge of major corporate funding agencies in country and
    regionally
  • Knowledge of current development philosophies and trends
  • Experience in successfully raising and managing bi-lateral &
    multilateral funding grant for reputable NGOs
  • Masters Degree or equivalent in relevant field (Social Sciences,
    finance or International Development)
