The MRC/UVRI Uganda
Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from the
Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the research
of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related
research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies,
clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural
studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to
inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific
publications in peer reviewed journals over time.

Job Summary:  The Senior Laboratory Technologist supervises
activities of the National and Regional Reference Laboratory for HIV drug
resistance and other associated Virology laboratories. Conduct laboratory
experiments, make detailed observations, and analyses data according to SOPs.
The position also ensures effective functioning of the laboratory while
adhering to SOPs and health and safety guidelines.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Performs laboratory procedures including sample accessioning,
    nucleic acid extraction, PCR, Real-Time PCR and sequencing according to
    established SOPs and using a variety of laboratory equipment.
  • Trains or supervises training of other laboratory staff and
    evaluates staff performance.
  • Evaluates quality control and quality assurance measures and
    modifies manuals as needed.
  • Plans workload distribution and makes schedules.
  • Develops a budget for the laboratory and maintains control of lab
    costs.
  • Enforces safety procedures.
  • Prepares reagents, standards and quality control materials to be
    used for test procedures.
  • Performs data entry, data retrieval and prepares laboratory
    worksheets and reports. Enters daily workload statistics into the
    laboratory information system.
  • Maintains a safe work environment by following established safe work
    practices and using personal protective equipment.
  • Monitors laboratory supplies and stocks up to adequate amounts.
  • Develops, evaluates and implements new techniques with the guidance
    of laboratory scientists.
  • Develops and reviews SOPs and laboratory policies and manuals.
  • Performing IATA compliant shipment of samples to and from partner
    laboratories.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Engage in field activities and site support supervision of
    participant enrolment.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the Medical Research Council
    (MRC) UK / UVRI) Senior Laboratory Technologist job must hold a
    Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences.
  • Possession of MSc. Molecular Biology, Virology or relevant
    Biological Sciences an added advantage
  • A minimum of two years of experience working in a research setting.
  • Hands-on experience and troubleshooting skills in fragment analysis
    and DNA sequencing using Applied Biosystems sequencing instruments and
    sequence analysis using available software
  • Ability to work and troubleshoot with minimal supervision, have
    excellent organizational skills, computer literacy in Microsoft Office
    applications.
  • Experience in assay development, single genome amplification for
    HIV-1 and generation of infectious molecular clones is a plus.
  • Should have an understanding of GCLP guidelines for human research
  • Should have an up to date practicing license
  • Should have good communication skills
  • Knowledgeable in use of Microsoft Office packages
