Job Summary:  The Protection Assistant will provide
technical advice, guidance and support to the successful design and
implementation of a capacity building project for first responders to be able
to do protection interventions in refugee settlements in Arua and Lamwo. The PA
will support established structures and other first responders to ensure that
protection interventions are planned and included in the disaster response
programming. The activities will among others include; training and building
capacity of local partners to effectively implement protection activities,
technical back-stopping on protection interventions, guiding and advising on
systematic referral and follow up mechanisms, case documentation and records.
Capacity building on guiding principles on human rights, diversity and inclusion,
as well as guiding on complaints and feedback handling mechanisms set up.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Under the supervision of the Project
    Manager and with guidance from the Protection Officer, the Protection
    Assistant shall provide oversight of all technical aspects related to
    protection programming in the DCA areas of operation in Arua and Lamwo in
    line with DCA and donor set guidelines and standards.
  • Build the capacity of implementing local
    partners, local committees and other first responders to effectively
    implement protection work in their areas and more so at the time of a
    disaster occurrence.
  • Train and empower partners, first
    responders and established community structures to be able to do
    monitoring, identify protection programming gaps and how to address
    them. 
  • Provide guidance and advise to partners
    during design and implementation of protection activities that promote the
    effectiveness of the sector; and support protection mainstreaming efforts
    across the project.
  • Guide and advise on quality and
    innovative approaches to protection activities.
  • Train partners to be able to effectively
    conduct regular field participatory protection assessments, using as much
    as possible an age, gender and diversity approach, in order to fully
    understand protection concerns and priorities.
  • Empower partners and first responders as
    well as local authorities to effectively facilitate discussion on main
    protection concerns and response capacity within the refugee and the host
    communities.
  • Build the capacity of partners to
    identify, individually advise and assess the needs of the most vulnerable
    individuals, particularly women at risk, and the available response
    opportunities in accordance with set guidelines, plans and schedules.
  • Train partners to formulate a strong and
    effective referral network for protection cases among themselves and other
    community structures; including updating databases on case referral and
    follow up.
  • Empower partners to develop monthly
    visit plans on assessing, re-assessing and following up cases in
    coordination with other stakeholders.
  • Develop effective relationships,
    communication and coordination with partners and other stakeholders
    through close interaction and consultations.
  • Contribute to the development of funding
    proposals to ensure availability of adequate financial resources for
    activities beyond the current project.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the DanChurchAid
    (DCA) Protection Assistant job placement must hold a Bachelor’s degree in social
    sciences, psychology, guidance and counselling or any other relevant field
  • At least three years of relevant
    professional experience;
  • A high respect to client and
    organisation confidentiality.
  • Respect for people with special needs
    and other vulnerability.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills,
    including patience, willingness to listen and respect for colleagues. Must
    be capable of working both individually and as part of a team.
  • Must possess a valid riding permit
