Council (DRC) is a private, independent, humanitarian organization working on
all aspects of the refugee cause in more than 36 countries throughout the
world. The aim of DRC is to protect refugees and internally displaced persons
(IDPs) against persecution and to promote durable solutions to the problems of
forced migration, on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. DRC
works in accordance with the UN Conventions on Refugees and the Code of Conduct
for the ICRC and NGOs in Disaster Relief.

Job Summary:   The Protection Officer  – Life Skills will be responsible for
planning, coordinating, implementing, monitoring and reporting of the project
in line with DRC goals and values in Rhino camp refugee settlement in Arua
district.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for design, coordination, implementation and
    contribution to the effective implementation of the adolescent project by
    working closely with the beneficiaries, local authorities and partners
    working in the area.
  • Responsible for selection of eligible and vulnerable adolescents to
    benefit from the project
  • Support the mentorship approach embedded in the project design.
  • Responsible for building self-esteem and confidence among
    adolescents
  • Facilitate development of self-management skills among adolescents
  • Building the capacity of adolescent to communicate effectively
  • Facilitate adolescent to Identify and pursue opportunities for
    economic empowerment.
  • Sensitizing adolescents on self-reliance, ownership and sustainable
    development.
  • Facilitate adolescents to know their human rights and
    responsibilities
  • Promoting sexual reproductive health among adolescent.
  • Developing strategies for participatory development of activities to
    meet the needs of the refugee adolescents.
  • Prepare a detailed monthly action plan and share with your
    supervisor for final review and approval. Clearly identify the specific
    problems to be addressed by the action and the perceived needs and
    constraints of the target groups and particularly how the action will
    provide the desired solutions.
  • Ensure timely field assessment/monitoring visits are conducted on
    project activities to ascertain the progress, challenges and propose
    solutions to the same.
  • Engage adolescents within the settlement on development programs,
    through FGDs, Peer to Peer Sessions.
  • Maintain close contacts with local authorities and RWCs in the
    refugee settlement; provide capacity building, meetings to improve
    community-based protection in the settlement.
  • Monitor the impact of livelihood and protection activities against
    the indicators set in the logical frame work of the project.
  • Write monthly, quarterly and annual narrative reports and appendices
    on all activities as required by Danish Refugee Council Uganda and Donors.
  • Organize project review meetings in the respective location
  • Support in budget monitoring
  • Develop work plans, budget proposals for the protection sector.
  • Attend to any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Protection
    Officer  – Life Skills job placement
    must hold a University Degree in social sciences, guidance and counselling,
    or relevant fields like development studies, business studies from
    recognized institutions.
  • At least two years of experience in Protection (SGBV & Child
    Protection), mobilization, psycho social support, social and economic
    integration programs for adolescents and youths.
  • Proven record in organizing and conducting of trainings
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Computer skills in MS packages: Excel, Word, Outlook mail
  • Good self-organization and basic management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, cultural sensitivity and to work
    with minimum supervision
  • Languages: Fluency
    in English and any other languages spoken by refugees
