About US:
Mt. Elgon
Labour-Based Training Centre (MELTC) is a Project under the Ministry of Works
and Transport. MELTC is the National Training Centre for the application of
Labour- Based Technology (LBT) in the rehabilitation and maintenance of
National, District, Urban and Community Access Roads. The Training Centre is
located 20 Kms from Mbale Town along the Mbale – Budadiri road; adjacent to
Uganda Technical College-Elgon. The training conducted at MELTC is both
classroom and field based.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Mobilizing support staff, materials, equipment and tools practical
training sessions - Ensuring that the First Aid Kit has all the necessary and essential
medication(s) - Liaising with Stores to ensure that all the materials and safety
gear are in place - Sourcing for premises for use as site camp(s) liaising with the
Landlord(s) - Liaising with the MELTC caterer to ensure that meals and water are
provided on time - Guiding the trainees during the practical sessions and offering
explanations - Participate in the prospecting and identification of gravel and
other materials - Assist the Training Engineer(s) in the preparation of the training
road BoQs - Participate in the selection of suitable road(s) and/or bridges
site(s) - Ensuring that all materials and tools used on site are stored safely
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a National
Diploma in Building/Civil Engineering or related field - Five years’ experience in the roads
sub-sector will be strongly desired - Ability to read drawings, plans and blue
prints - In depth knowledge of road construction
procedures, equipment and Occupational Safety and Health Guidelines - Ability to work in a multidisciplinary
and multicultural environment - Strong interpersonal skills, including
team management and understanding others - Ability for conceptual and analytical
thinking - Ability to work independently and
proactively - Good working knowledge of Microsoft
Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc)
Added Advantage(s):
Working knowledge of
Labour-based road works and low cost sealing
