About US:

The Regional Health
integration to Enhance Services (RHITES)-North, Lango project is a Five-year
contract funded by USAID and implemented by a Team of partners with JSI as the
prime. The JSI team includes, Doctors with Africa CUAMM, AMREF Health Africa,
Another Option, and The Medical Concierge Group (TMCG). RHITES-N, Lango is
aimed at improving the use of integrated health services in the Lango
Sub-region of Northern Uganda’s, strengthening the health system to sustain
gains made by earlier projects, improving key population-based national health
indicators and building the capacity of the district local government to carry
out a sustainable and locally-driven response to the HIV epidemic, while also
improving TB, Malaria, Nutrition, Maternal, Neonatal, Child and Adolescent
health (MNCAH), and water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) outcomes through
strengthening of existing structures and processes, improving access to and
strategic use of health and nutrition information, strengthening
community-health facility systems and expanding innovation through integrated
health and nutrition services.

Job Summary: The
Counselor will provide comprehensive counselling services to patients in
chronic care in the HIV clinic, antenatal care/ Mother Baby care points and
Tuberculosis Units.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Provide quality and comprehensive counselling services to clients,
    family members, communities and partners, with focus on HIV and TB
    services
  • Empower clients in chronic care to disclose their HIV status to
    significant others
  • Use index client testing to access HIV testing services among
    children, sexual partners/networks and family members
  • Participate in the process of empowering clients with skills for
    self-reliance and making appropriate succession plans
  • Participate in the mobilization and support of communities to offer
    HIV education and care
  • Provide home-based HIV counseling and testing, and TB screening to
    household members
  • Conduct home visits to clients on ART and TB for adherence support
  • Establish and support peer support groups for clients
  • Participate in the drawing and implementation of the clinic work
    plans.
  • Perform counselling and other support techniques and procedures as
    requested and prescribed by the clinicians
  • High degree of Integrity, Empathy, Patience, Confi dentiality
  • Possess the ability to work under mental and physical stress
  • Provide information to clients, aimed at reducing their
    vulnerability to diseases and infections through health education.
  • Participate in HIV/AIDS awareness at the clinic and sensitizations
    in the communities
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Key Outputs:

  • Comprehensive HIV psychosocial services provided
  • Comprehensive OVC services delivered
  • Clients adhering to ART
  • Viral load suppression achieved among clients
  • Clients retained in care
  • Clients linked to other services

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must hold a Diploma in Counselling. A relevant
    bachelor’s degree social work, counselling psychology, guidance will be an
    added advantage
  • Short term capacity development courses on HIV counselling is an
    added advantage
  • The applicant should preferably have at least a year’s experience in
    HIV
  • Counselling, and have experience in supporting HIV / AIDS and TB
    prevention and care services (both facility and community).
  • A clear and concise understanding of the psychosocial issues
    relating to health and illness
  • Deep knowledge of care planning procedures
  • Good communication, team building, innovative skills
