services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab) and Outreach.

About Project:

IDI has received
funding from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) to conduct
research on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Malawi and Uganda. The goal of
this research project is to take an interdisciplinary approach to determine the
drivers of transmission of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing
Escherichia coli and ESBL Klebsiella pneumoniae in Kampala and Hoima districts.
To model the drivers of AMR-transmission, the project will undertake detailed,
longitudinal microbiological surveillance of humans, animals and the
environment to understand the dynamics of ESBL-E. coli and ESBL-K. pneumoniae
and their ecological niche. The laboratory-based work for the project involves
screening of human (blood and faecal), animal (faecal) and environmental
specimens for the target organisms using molecular and phenotypic methods.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the Co-Investigator (Microbiology) to customize and adopt
    the protocols/ standard operating procedures (SOPs) for hospital and field
    specimen collection, transportation, processing and testing
  • Certify that there is uninterrupted availability of supplies for
    specimen collection, transportation, processing and testing through:
    reviewing the list of critical supplies, keeping inventory of the
    supplies, timely ordering of supplies, receiving of supplies as well as
    ensuring safe storage of the supplies, all in line with established SOPs
  • Supervise the 2 laboratory technicians (1 based at DMM; 1 based at Hoima
    Regional Referral Hospital) on the project including: certifying that they
    have the right competences required for their roles through training,
    mentoring and coaching.
  • Manage project laboratory data by overseeing entry of specimen data
    into database and preparing periodic reports from the data.
  • Certify that biosafety and biosecurity guidelines are adhered to in
    all processes of specimen management at all times.
  • Keep track of tests being done by other testing personnel on behalf
    of the project to guarantee timely reporting of results and accurate
    capture of the data.
  • Provide weekly reports to the Co-investigator responsible for the
    microbiology component as required by the reporting guidelines.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a Biomedical
    Laboratory Science field
  • At least two years’ experience of working in a Clinical Microbiology
    Laboratory
  • A minimum of two years’ experience of coordinating project related
    activities
