its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research, Laboratory
services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab) and Outreach.

About Project:

IDI has received
funding from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) to conduct
research on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Malawi and Uganda. The goal of
this research project is to take an interdisciplinary approach to determine the
drivers of transmission of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing
Escherichia coli and ESBL Klebsiella pneumoniae in Kampala and Hoima districts.
To model the drivers of AMR-transmission, the project will undertake detailed,
longitudinal microbiological surveillance of humans, animals and the
environment to understand the dynamics of ESBL-E. coli and ESBL-K. pneumoniae
and their ecological niche. The laboratory-based work for the project involves
screening of human (blood and faecal), animal (faecal) and environmental
specimens for the target organisms using molecular and phenotypic methods.

Job Summary:  The Laboratory Technician will have based at
the Makerere University Department of Medical Microbiology (DMM)/ Department of
Immunology and Molecular Biology (DIMB) laboratories. They shall be responsible
for day-to-day testing of project specimens.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Optimize protocols for detection of ESBL-E. coli and ESBL-K.
    pneumoniae from human, animal and environmental specimens as part of their
    MSc. Microbiology dissertation under the supervision of the Co-Investigator
    (Microbiology)
  • Receive and test hospital and field specimens in a timely manner
    according to the project Standard Operating Procedures
  • Capture specimen data into the project database in an accurate and
    timely manner
  • Certify that all supply needs are reported to the DRUM Laboratory
    Coordinator in a timely manner
  • Document and report all challenges encountered in specimen
    management to the DRUM Laboratory Coordinator in a timely manner
  • Register for the MSc. Immunology and Clinical Microbiology at the
    Makerere University DMM and DIMB during the 2020/21 academic year

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the Laboratory Technician job must hold a
    Bachelor’s degree in a Biomedical Laboratory Science field
  • One-year experience of working in a Clinical Microbiology Laboratory
  • One-year experience of working in Molecular biology laboratory and
    must be conversant with procedures for DNA extraction, standard and
    real-time PCR and DNA storage
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative, team environment
  • Proven communication and customer service skills
  • Self-motivated person who takes the initiative to accomplish project
    goals
  • Desire to learn and grow others is a must
