About US:

Uganda Christian
University was founded when the historic Bishop Tucker Theological College was
promoted as a university in 1997. Bishop Tucker Theological College trained
clergy and educators during its 84-year history from 1913-1997. The local
chief, Hamu Mukasa, granted land for the college to operate in Mukono.
International partnerships were part of the College’s missionary history. The
Church Mission Society teamed with Ugandan leaders and others to assure the
College had the necessary intellectual and other capital. By the late 1990s,
the Church of Uganda sought to have a broader impact on society through the
higher education – not only of clergy but of other professionals as well.
Uganda Christian University was established in 1997.

Job Summary:   The University Counselor will provide
counselling services and also actively participate in the planned empowerment
programmes for the community so as to enable them handle their psychosocial
issues.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise the staff in the department and counsellor trainees who
    carry out counselling practicum within the University and under the
    Counselling Department.
  • Conduct group counselling sessions for individuals who may be
    working through similar challenges.
  • Initiate and effect guidance and counselling opportunities as the
    need may arise.
  • Provide learning opportunities to members of the University
    community through talks, seminars, workshops, and public discussions on
    issues that concern their mental, emotional, relational and over-all
    well-being.
  • Build up, maintain and continually update the information and
    resource base within the Counselling Department and Office: books,
    pamphlets, audio and audio-visual resources.
  • Endeavour to continually upgrade personal knowledge of counselling
    and practical skills and expertise in counselling through personal study,
    mentoring and peer relationships, attendance and participation in
    workshops and seminars and further formal training.
  • Contribute to the Administrative management of the University
    through attendance and participation in DOSA/F & A Division Management
    meetings.
  • Represent the University in any matters concerning counselling:
    mental, emotional, relational and over all well-being.
  • Coordinate counselling outreach programs.
  • Plan, organize and implement the counselling outreach programs.
  • Establish partnership and maintain good relationships.
  • Mobilize and encourage participation of other stakeholders.
  • Establish and oversee addicts support programs.
  • Perform any other official duties that may be assigned by the
    Supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate must hold a Master’s degree in a Counselling
    Field from a recognized Institution of Higher Learning.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Counselling Field from a recognized
    Institution of Higher Learning.
  • A minimum of five years of working experience in counselling and
    working with young adults.
  • Must be a mature born-again and practicing Christian.
  • Must have good Interpersonal professional skills: ability to
    cooperate and network on a multidisciplinary team including medical,
    chaplaincy, academic staff, administration, Dean of Students’ office, and
    other counsellors and psychologists to optimally serve the clients.
  • Must be a good listener, able to build warm, respectful and caring
    relationships
  • Must have Discernment and good judgment to know when to refer a
    client to another counsellor or another professional.
  • Must be a good time manager and exhibit the ability to analyze
    problems and formulate solutions.
  • Must be a person of high integrity and able to maintain
    confidentiality.
  • Must be a fully registered and credited member of Uganda Counselling
    Association.
