Uganda National
Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade
Industry and Cooperatives responsible for standardization, Quality Assurance,
Metrology and Laboratory Testing (SQMT) with the objective of facilitating fair
trade, promoting local industries and Consumer protection. The Uganda National
Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade,
Industry and Co-operatives established by the UNBS Act Cap 327 and became
operational in 1989. It is governed by the National Standards Council and
headed by the Executive Director who is responsible for the day-to-day
operation of UNBS.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct inspections and coordinate all inspections arising out of
    release under seal management
  • Supervise and monitor downgrading, rework and destruction of
    condemned goods
  • Carryout Pre-delivery inspections to eligible clients like UNICEF,
    Ministry of Education and Office of the Prime Minister and any other
    clients that may come on board
  • In consultation with the Senior Inspector – Compliance and Quality
    Assurance, maintain an effective interface with URA to follow-up on cases
    of imports released through the direct channels for effective inspection
    at owners premises
  • Undertake motor vehicle inspection activities in the greater Kampala
    region
  • Take lead in training of inspectors in inspection techniques
  • Responsible to overseeing implementation and adherence to quality
    management system requirements in the section
  • Undertake performance appraisal of staff under supervision
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the UNBS Senior Inspector – National Inspection
    job opportunity should hold a Post Graduate qualification in science and
    an Honours Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Food science, Food Technology,
    Engineering or any other science related qualification from a recognized
    University/ Institution
  • At least five years’ experience in Standards, Quality Assurance, or
    quality control, Standards Development or Laboratory Testing after
    graduation
  • Computer literate with skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and
    Internet applications.
  • The successful candidate must have a high level of integrity and
    professionalism, Communication, Teamwork and Analytical skills and needs
    to be a team player, an excellent communicator with good oral
    communication and presentation skills.
  • Age: Between 30
    and 45 years
