Uganda National
Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade
Industry and Cooperatives responsible for standardization, Quality Assurance,
Metrology and Laboratory Testing (SQMT) with the objective of facilitating fair
trade, promoting local industries and Consumer protection. The Uganda National
Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade,
Industry and Co-operatives established by the UNBS Act Cap 327 and became
operational in 1989. It is governed by the National Standards Council and
headed by the Executive Director who is responsible for the day-to-day
operation of UNBS.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan, provide technical support and supervise market surveillance
activities throughout the country to ensure that substandard and expired
products are reduced in line with UNBS policies and procedures. - Carry out factory inspections to ensure that manufacturing processes
and products conform to the requirements of national standards. - Develop and coordinate collaborative frameworks with other
regulatory agencies/ institutions in enforcement of mandatory standards in
line with UNBS policies and procedures. - Document consumer complaints related to non-compliance to mandatory
standard requirements to guide management in decision making and trust
building with the traders and other stakeholders. - Provide technical advisory information to industries and UNBS
clientele for quality improvements - Develop annual, quarterly and monthly work plans, budget and reports
of all activities within the Division. - Coordinate staff performance of all staff in the section and ensure
that targets, plans and outputs are achieved within schedules and budgets
and regularly review their performance during performance review meetings
and annual performance appraisal.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant for the UNBS Senior Surveillance Officer job
opportunity should hold a post graduate qualification in a science field
from a recognized University/Institution - Possession of Honours degree in a science field from a recognized
University/Institution - A minimum of five years of prior experience in Standards, Quality
Assurance, or quality control, Standards Development or Laboratory Testing - Should have completed the approved competence development training
in Certification - Training in ISO 9001 is an added advantage
- Proven people leadership and functional management competencies with
hands-on skills in Risk Management and internal controls in the functional
areas - Hands-on supervisory competencies with capacity to multi-task and deliver
results efficiently with minimal supervision - The successful candidate must have a high level of integrity and
professionalism, Communication, Teamwork and Analytical skills and needs
to be a team player, an excellent communicator with good oral communication
and presentation skills. - Age: Between 30
and 45 years
