Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade
Industry and Cooperatives responsible for standardization, Quality Assurance,
Metrology and Laboratory Testing (SQMT) with the objective of facilitating fair
trade, promoting local industries and Consumer protection. The Uganda National
Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body under the Ministry of Trade,
Industry and Co-operatives established by the UNBS Act Cap 327 and became
operational in 1989. It is governed by the National Standards Council and
headed by the Executive Director who is responsible for the day-to-day operation
of UNBS.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop calibration methods and techniques based on principles of
measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems, and
accuracy and precision requirements to calibrate client’s equipment - Evaluate calibration systems that measure characteristics of
objects, substances, or phenomena such as length, mass, time, temperature,
electric current, luminous intensity, and derived units of physical or
chemical measure - Identify magnitudes of error sources contributing to uncertainty of
results to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative
terms in line with set NML policies and procedures. - Train and direct private calibrators engineering, quality, and
laboratory personnel in design, manufacture, evaluation, and calibration
of measurement standards, instruments, and test systems to ensure
selection of approved instrumentation - Prepare measurement schemes for determination of uncertainties and
ensures installation and examination of new Equipment - Ensures training of junior staff in the use and calibration of
equipment - Participate in planning of calibration work and undertake tests/
calibrations in line with the Departmental guidelines, procedures and work
plan - Undertake on-site tests/calibration services line with the
Departmental guidelines, procedures. - Undertake inter-calibrations in collaboration with other
laboratories and undertake clear documentation - Develop and implement a quality management system for the Laboratory
- Perform any other relevant duties that may be assigned from time to
time by the Head of division.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant for the UNBS Senior Metrologist job opportunity should
hold a Post graduate qualification in physics or Engineering related field
from a recognized University/Institute - Honours degree in physics, engineering (electrical, electronics,
mechanical) or any other related field. - At least five years’ experience in related work
- Should have completed approved competence development training in
ISO 17025 - Must be computer literate with skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
and the Internet applications - The successful candidate must have a high level of integrity and
professionalism, Communication, Teamwork and Analytical skills and needs
to be a team player, an excellent communicator with good oral
communication and presentation skills - Age: Between 30
and 45 years
