Mengo Hospital was
founded in 1897 in Kampala, and is the oldest hospital in Uganda. It currently
serves as an urban community hospital that provides modern medical care. Mengo
Hospital provides comprehensive care including radiology, obstetrics,
dentistry, orthopedics, and surgery. Additionally, Mengo Hospital provides
critical training and education to health professionals through its various
programs in midwifery and nursing, health sciences, and laboratory technology.
Mengo Hospital also has a dedicated research and development team that works to
find new solutions to health issues in Uganda.
Job Summary:  The Social Worker will provide quality
comprehensive social support for Mengo Eye Department clients and their
families Position holder is also responsible for enhancing sustainable
referrals and linkages that will complement the required support for clients.
The position holder will also identify clients for purpose of waiver scheme,
fundraising, and advocacy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Actively participate in the developing a payment plan for patients
    in liaison with the Head of finance and project manager
  • Identify and assess potential clients for CBM fundraising programme
    and other children with disabilities
  • Identify those who are eligible to benefit for a waiver scheme
  • Offer pre and post counseling services to parents and Persons with
    eye diseases
  • Conduct appropriate referrals for the identified persons with eye
    diseases
  • Sensitize parents, community leader, schools, Health centers and
    other stakeholders on the causes, prevention, and management of eye
    diseases
  • Train parents, caregivers, Community Based Organizations and good
    Samaritans/Community volunteers village health teams in child
    safeguarding, inclusion, and attitude change
  • Collaborate with other actors to enhance referrals and Networking.
  • Organize review meetings with parents, community volunteers and
    partner Organizations at the district level.
  • Participate in the documentation of CBM Fundraising materials.
  • Program activities and their expected roles in the Rehabilitation of
    their children
  • Carry out patient social assessment and plan the appropriate
    intervention.
  • Support vulnerable patients (children) to benefit from the waiver
    scheme.
  • Provide patients and caretakers with appropriate information about
    Hospital services, systems, and payments.
  • Providing counseling services and coping strategies for children
    with disabilities, parents, and caregivers while at the hospital.
  • Support patients in need of psychotherapy while at the hospital
  • Identify child safeguarding issues and discuss with the focal
    person.
  • Submit monthly reports and statistics to Head of department on a monthly
    basis
  • Ensure understanding and adherence to the child safeguarding policy
    and children’s rights.
  • Co-ordinate and participate in the information, Education and
    communication training sessions for clients, attendants and parents.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should hold a Diploma in social works and social
    Administration
  • Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration will be of an
    added advantage
  • Other related health qualifications; nursing, palliative care
  • Should be a registered member of National Social Workers Association
    of Uganda
  • Five years’ experience in social work if Diploma holder
  • Two years’ experience in social work if Degree holder
  • One year of experience in counseling
  • Knowledge and experience of HIV/AIDS care issues
  • Knowledge of social work principles human rights and the law
  • Knowledge of social service delivery
  • Knowledge of Community Based Rehabilitation and inclusive services
  • Knowledge in Child safeguarding and Community mobilization
  • Working knowledge of English and Luganda
