The Infectious
Diseases Institute (IDI) is an international non-profit organization which is a
partnership of infectious diseases and public health specialists. The overall
objective of the IDI is to strengthen health systems with strong emphasis on
Infectious Diseases, through Research and Capacity Development. IDI has five
operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention,
Care and Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory services (provided
through a partnership with the Makerere University – John Hopkins University
Core Lab) and Outreach.
Job Summary:   The Program Documentation and Utilization
Specialist will lead IDI’s efforts to document, publish and disseminate
findings and lessons from its programs. He/she will play an important role in
ensuring synergy across IDI activities and related initiatives, and in sharing
of learning from this work to the broader Institute and its stakeholders. S/he
must listen critically and effectively communicate IDI’s initiatives through
excellent written outputs, presentations and representation at meetings and
conferences, and participation in/coordination of IDI program events and
crosscutting technical forums.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Work with the SMT members to identify, document and (where
    possible/necessary) publish key IDI historical outputs through a range of
    publications as appropriate including through “grey”
    literature” such as Working papers, technical summaries, case
    reports, blogs and vlogs, policy briefs
  • Research and propose technical approach for IDI’s program learnings
    utilization including application of core research utilization use tools,
    methods, and strategies as appropriate.
  • Develop a program documentation and utilization/learning plan for
    all projects at IDI through liaise with IDI programs leading to
    appropriate inclusion in project work plans
  • Review current study/program-specific advisory panel/committees.
  • Develop an advisory panel/committee SOPs and support programs to
    establish advisory panels including but not limited to identify committee
    participants, Support programs/ projects to develop stakeholder engagement
    plans and to develop recommendations for dissemination
  • Contribute to the writing and development of information
    communication products and results dissemination strategies, and ensure
    that they are available through all IDI media (website, social media etc.)
  • Build partnerships with organizations and networks working to
    promote the dissemination, use and scale- up of evidence and best
    practices
  • Attend and present at national and international technical meetings
    and support programs to prepare manuscripts for publication in the peer
    reviewed literature as opportunities arise
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other units in the College of Health
    Sciences and Makerere University in general to foster interest and
    capacity in data demand and use. Assist with developing new project-based
    opportunities for data use activities
  • S/he will be responsible for mentoring staff and partners in
    documentation and dissemination of key program lessons and evidence.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant for the Program Documentation and Utilization
    Specialist job must hold a Master’s degree in Public Health, Public
    Policy/Administration or related field and/or experience in lieu
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrable technical writing record and experience in
    communicating technical data to non-technical audiences
  • A strong publication record is an added advantage
  • Demonstrated experience in documentation of programs;
  • Experience working in research utilization/data use/knowledge translation
    and application of research findings/data to program or policy improvement  especially in support of global health
    research or development programs is an added advantage
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of programs and methodologies for
    documenting program results as well as an understanding of policy
    processes
