action. Currently the organization implements relief and development projects
in West Nile, Acholi, Karamoja and South-Western Uganda. ADRA wishes to recruit
a highly qualified, experienced and energetic Ugandan national, to occupy the
vacant position of Internal Auditor/Controller.
About CEMS:
Comprehensive
Emergency Medical Support (CEMS) – Field Emergency and Inpatient Unit +
Comprehensive Primary and Secondary Health Clinic. The CEMS Project is
contributing to run a static emergency medical unit 24/7 in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement
that is serving the refugee community mainly from DRC, as well the host
community.
Job Summary:   The Head Nurse should display a sound
understanding of nursing practice and a high level of people skills, should be
well organized and a clear communicator, and enrolled in administrative duties,
reporting and paperwork relative to clinical work. The Head Nurse is also
responsible for supervising the work of the nurses on the team and ensuring
that they have the appropriate training and direction. She/he works with
doctors to prepare and follow individual care plans for each patient and
updates regularly on progress and any changes in patients’ conditions. The Head
Nurse also cares for patients directly herself/himself, build relationships
with them and ensures that they are well cared for. The Head Nurse works as
part of a team with physicians, other nurses and healthcare professionals to
provide care, monitor health conditions, plan long-term care needs, administer
medicine, use medical equipment, perform minor medical operations, and advise
patients and their families on illness, care and continued care after a
hospital stay. The Head Nurse will supervise and mentor the work of the nursing
staff, which might include registered nurses, nurse practitioners, certified
nursing assistants and other health professionals from the medical team. For
the CEMS project, the Head Nurse works to quickly assess the need of each
patient, prioritize case based on its critical nature, and lead the team
accordingly. Its required for the position to have a clear communication with
each member of the team. The Head Nurse will assist the Doctors in medical and
surgical consultations and perform minor medical procedures under the
supervision of the attending doctor in the static clinic, as well as
undertaking visits to nearby settlements/communities as required.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Assist and support the Nurse Coordinator;
  • Participate and co-lead on morning medical meeting daily;
  • Responsible for the performance of her/his team, monitoring and
    evaluating the nurses who work under him/her and ensure they are
    fulfilling all their job requirements;
  • Oversee the work of the nursing department and supervise all medical
    and laboratory services as well as maintaining accurate nursing records;
  • Be enrolled in nursing activities at the CEMS;
  • Liaise with the Nurse Coordinator nursing care by allocating
    resources where they are needed, whether in the form of nurses,
    medication, doctors or equipment;
  • Make sure all the patients for whom is responsible have their needs
    met and receive appropriate attention;
  • Monitor all patient care activities and ensure adherence to all
    hospital policies by the team, providing doctors with the relevant
    paperwork and information on the patients they are treating;
  • Identify and recommend innovations and service changes in practice
    and be responsible for establishing the necessary clinical change;
  • Maintains nursing supplies inventory by supervising the Stores
    Keeper, checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed
    supplies;
  • Checks cleanliness of general hospital areas and checks if these
    areas are conducive to the health of the patients;
  • Give talks and teach classes within the facility or elsewhere;
  • To carry and respond to a radio/phone when On Duty;
  • Coordinate and make arrangements for patients that need a referral
    or come with a referral from different health organisations, directing
    them to the right department.
  • Highly critical thinking skills assessing patient’s health, as well
    as detecting changes in symptoms, health or pain, and knowing when action
    is necessary;
  • Being organised and knowing how to prioritise is essential when
    dealing with multiple patients with different needs, stages of health and
    risks… attention to detail is crucial;
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance
    requirements and maintaining equipment inventories;
  • Have a clear communication with the patient as well with the doctors
    and another team member.
  • Enthusiastic, enduring, and willing to work for extra hours;
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending
    educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing
    personal networks, etc;
  • Compassionate and sympathetic to the patient’s needs, and be able to
    deal with people in various states of pain, trauma and tragedy;
  • Maintain flexibility to take on added responsibility as and when
    needed;
  • Be able to function in the heat of an emergency.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate for the ADRA Uganda Head Nurse job placement
    should hold a Degree in Nursing
  • At least five years of experience in ED
  • Ability to work in rotating shifts of 8 hours
  • Flexibility to work 16 hours shift when needed
  • Availability to work 24 hours shifts;
  • Fluent in English (preferred)
  • Swahili and French (preferred)
  • Experience in management, administration and planning skills
  • Ability to communicate and interact well with people from different
    educational, linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills and aptness to build effective
    working relationships with staff and management at all levels
  • Proficiency in handling basic computer programs used in hospital
    management and basic computer skills in Word and Excel.
