Diseases Institute (IDI) is an international non-profit organization which is a
partnership of infectious diseases and public health specialists. The overall
objective of the IDI is to strengthen health systems with strong emphasis on
Infectious Diseases, through Research and Capacity Development. IDI has five
operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention,
Care and Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory services (provided
through a partnership with the Makerere University – John Hopkins University
Core Lab) and Outreach.
support the Head of Department to provide strategic leadership of the
department, supervision of the day to day departmental activities and act as
Head of Department in the absence of the Head of Department. The deputy HOD
research will also be a member of the IDI Senior Management Team (SMT). Additionally,
he/she will provide substantive support to the Head of Department in overseeing
the Clinical Trials Unit, with particular emphasis in working with the Quality
ensuring that there is regulatory compliance, in accordance to national and
international regulations, as well as IDI standardized operational procedures.
- Assist the HoD in coordinating and liaising with all present and
former IDI scholars to support the research department agenda. - Lead in promoting and spearheading the integration of research and
outreach departments in order to develop proposed plans aimed at using IDI
outreach platforms to provide nationally representative estimates of HIV
care, treatment and research. - Provide support to the HoD in promoting and facilitating cutting
edge research through establishing new collaborations and strengthening
existing collaborations. - Represent the HoD at selected department and institutional meetings
and promote collaboration between the Department with external
Institutions (e.g. The College of Health Sciences, MoH) - Actively engage in generating research concepts and ideas that will
facilitate possible grant application and contribute, support other teams
in scientific and grants writing - Participate actively in promoting IDI research goal and support the
monitoring of research performance indicators - Mentor junior researcher, students and scholars attached to IDI
- Together with the Head of Department and research Manager contribute
to the annual financial projections and budgeting - Act as the vice chairperson for the IDI Scientific Review Committee
(SRC) in terms of fielding inquiries about research processes from
potential researches - In close collaboration with prevention, care and treatment team,
Lead the IDI journal club in through identification of strategic papers to
be presented and write periodic reports - Provide oversight and guidance to the research scholars across the
IDI capacity-building grants - Build and publicize IDI programs at the Makerere College of Health
Sciences, Ministry of Health, other health organizations in Uganda and in
the region - Support the HoD to cultivate, develop, and maintain research
partnerships in line with the IDI research strategic plan
- The applicant for the Deputy Head of Department- Research job must
hold a master’s degree in a medical and biomedical, and statistics
sciences field. - A PhD or equivalent in medical, statistics and biomedical fields
will be an added advantage - Additional training in epidemiology, and research methods
- Five years of relevant experience in working on clinical trials or
epidemiologic studies - Five years of relevant experience in conducting research studies
- A compelling publication records in peer review journal Familiar
with national and international regulatory requirement - Previous exposure and experience in data management with working
knowledge of biostatistics (STATA, Epi Info, SPSS, etc) - Self-motivated, innovative and capable of meeting deadlines.
- Experience of Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
- Familiar and up to date with national and international research
regulations and guidelines including institutional research Standard
Operating Procedures (SOPs)
