Hygiene and Sanitation Team Leader
Council (DRC) is a private, independent, humanitarian organization working on
all aspects of the refugee cause in more than 36 countries throughout the
world. The aim of DRC is to protect refugees and internally displaced persons
(IDPs) against persecution and to promote durable solutions to the problems of
forced migration, on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. DRC
works in accordance with the UN Conventions on Refugees and the Code of Conduct
for the ICRC and NGOs in Disaster Relief.
Hygiene Promotion will work in hand with the field level hygiene promoters and
community structures to improve on hygiene and sanitation within the
settlement.
- Work with local leaders at community levels in identifying,
mobilizing and sensitizing target communities for water, sanitation and
hygiene promotion. - Create linkages between the communities and the project, the local
government extension staff and the target communities in Water, Sanitation
and Hygiene, promotion. - Together with the government extension staff, specifically, the
Health Assistants (HA s), Village Health Teams (VHTs), & Parish
Development Committees (PDCs) play a lead role in mapping out communities
for village sanitation improvement, especially during the CLTS/PHAST role
out exercise - Mobilization of beneficiary communities to maintain the
established/rehabilitated/protected water sources - Formation/training of Water supply and sanitation committees for the
established/rehabilitated/protected water sources. - Participate in collection of useful data, success stories and
beneficiary lists as required - Participate in preparing monthly/quarterly/annual highlights/
reports and proposals and budgets for donors. - Assist the WASH Officer in inspection of boreholes, shallow wells
and water pumps and other water supply systems to ensure they are
operational.

- Represent DRC at WASH Hygiene and sanitation exercises in the field.
- Ensure integration of WASH activities with other DRC sectors.
- Coordinate with WASH counterparts in Rhino camp in the
implementation of common funded projects. - Ensure good representation and reputation of WASH Sector at all
levels. - Actively participate in internal and external coordination meeting
development:
- Together with the WASH Officer, contribute to development of project
concepts and proposal documents in respect to hygiene and sanitati - Develop the project’s M&E tools for monitoring sanitation and
hygiene promotion at community level.

- Ensure hygiene and sanitation standards are met in accordance to
Sphere, UNHCR and the Uganda National standards. - Support the WASH officer in preparing WASH weekly reports
- Execute other duties as signed by the supervisor,
- Work with Community Based Hygiene Promoters and local leaders to
ensure proper dissemination of information on water issues to
beneficiaries for improvement. - Uphold DRC’s code of conduct and principles of accountability.
- Develop and agree on own performance objectives, targets and ensure
appraisals are conducted on the set targets as requirments - Conduct daily field visits to support hygiene promoters on
implementation of WASH.
- Support in tracking distribution of hygiene and sanitation items on
a daily/weekly basis. - Support initiation of procurement of NFIs by providing the WASH
Officer with information on items to be procured - Support the Information Management Volunteer with updating NFIs
inventory and PR tracker.
- The ideal candidate for the Danish Refugee Council Water, Sanitation
and Hygiene Assistant – Hygiene Promotion job placement should hold a
Diploma in Environment Health Science, Water Engineering or WASH related
course from recognized institution. Bachelor’s degree is an added
advantage. - One year of experience in implementing WASH project specifically in
areas of hygiene and sanitation - Thorough knowledge of WASH national and international standards.
- Proven skills in computer programs (Word, Excel; minimum)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent skills in report writing and meeting dead lines
- Demonstrated ability to work in war conflict areas
- To establish effective working relations with the other team members
and other stakeholders. - Languages: Good Communication skills in English required. Fluency in
local languages
